Restocked on the good stuff - Eastern Red Cedar!
~~~~~~~~~~~~
ERC is the foundation material of almost all my foodscape construction for a couple of reasons:
1. It's naturally pest & rot-resistant, easily lasting 20-30 years or more in ground contact.
2. Local trees, locally-milled, getting to retire locally!
3. Have you seen it?? Smelled it??
Cedar is neater!
What-a-canes?? Hopefully this will help untangle any confusion around pruning your blackberries this summer!
~~~~~
👵🏼 "Floricanes" are the shoots that grew last year and produced fruit this year. Prune them back to the ground once the harvest is over (I recommend burning the old canes in case they're harboring pests/disease).
~~~~~
👶🏼"Primocanes" are the shoots that grew this year, and will fruit next year. Tie them onto the trellis and prune the tips down to 4-6ft to encourage side branching (and more berries!). Thin the remaining canes down to 4-6 per linear foot of trellis, and prune off any side branches below 12" to encourage better airflow. In late summer you can shorten any side branches back to 12-18".
~~~~~
Happy pruning!

Figs! If you're struggling to get ripe figs before the first frost in the fall, pruning might be the answer.

1️⃣ In late winter, prune off any dead branches (look for green when you scratch the bark), and prune 4-6 living branches down to 2-4ft (I prefer more vertical branches)
2️⃣ Throughout the growing season (Apr-Oct), prune ALL new shoots that pop up from the ground, and thin out side shoots that droop to the ground
3️⃣ Allowing the plant to focus its energy into fewer branches should help them to harden off and better survive freezing weather, but insulating the crown of the plant with leaves or straw bales doesn't hurt.

Happy fi***ng!

Groundhogs be gone! This garden was overrun by pesky varmints that were wreaking havoc on everything but the zinnias. Between the wire "apron" that extends out from the base of the fence and the electric wire around the perimeter, this custom critter fence will keep them out while elevating the look of the garden.

Next week's high temperatures are forecast to be in the mid to upper 90s. Community resources are available to help individuals stay safe, including cool spaces, water and support. Thanks to the Knoxville-Knox County Office of Housing Stability for providing this list of services and opportunities. Link in top comment.

Sharing is caring, but sometimes your local wildlife doesn't get that memo. If you decide to net your blueberries, make sure you have a way of suspending the net OVER the bushes, otherwise, removing the net to harvest is likely to pop off half your berries!
