GreenBlue Urban We create sustainable urban landscapes by providing green infrastructure solutions to landscape architects, urban designers, civil engineers, and contractors.

We help create sustainable urban landscapes for our future generations by providing green infrastructure solutions to landscape architects, urban designers, civil engineers, and contractors. Our industry-leading ArborSystem offers trees in urban environments the best opportunity to thrive, while also providing a sustainable answer to stormwater management. With 28 years of experience in urban tree planting, GreenBlue Urban pride themselves on their industry-leading expertise, experience and proven track record of successful projects. GreenBlue Urban researches and provides solutions for green infrastructure challenges in our cities. Since our companies’ establishment in 1992, we’ve been assisting trees in their battle to establish in urban areas across the globe. With the goal of drastically improving urban planting success and increasing leaf canopy in our cities, we tirelessly analyzed the challenges, causes of failure and reasons for premature mortality in urban trees. We then examined the impact that poor planting can have on urban infrastructure. Having identified the key issues in both of these areas, we systematically researched solutions and designed practical products and systems to address them. Local authorities, landscape architects, engineers and other related professionals increasingly turn to GreenBlue for guidance and best practice advice on tree planting implementation. As North America’s market leader in urban landscape products and specialist tree pit systems, we are able to offer more than 20 years of frontline experience in the field, exhaustive research, product development and field trials. Our support service, unrivaled in the tree-planting world, can help you to achieve your vision. Based in Knoxville, Tennessee, GreenBlue Urban USA has grown every year since its inception and operates distribution networks across North America. Our program of continuous product development, conducted in conjunction with overseas partners, ensures that specifiers and clients can rest assured that the systems we offer for green infrastructures and urban planting schemes represent the very best in the sector.

Urban trees are not just for Christmas!

Seasonal trees temporarily change how streets and public spaces feel, but their impact is short lived. Once removed, the lack of permanent greenery is immediately apparent.

Well designed urban trees function as long term infrastructure. When properly established, they provide measurable benefits including air quality improvement, urban cooling, stormwater management, biodiversity support and improved public realm quality throughout the year.

The main constraint is not planting ambition but below ground conditions. Compacted soils, limited rooting volume and conflicts with utilities prevent many street trees from reaching maturity.

Soil cell systems create load bearing structures that protect soil beneath pavements and roads, allowing roots to develop while supporting surface uses. SuDS tree pits integrate water management, reducing pressure on drainage networks while improving tree health and resilience.

Permanent green infrastructure requires the same level of planning and investment as any other urban system. Seasonal installations can highlight the value of greenery, but only mature, well supported trees deliver long term environmental and placemaking outcomes.

The Booths Supermarket in Penrith provides a clear example of how the right below-ground conditions can deliver strong and lasting tree performance. When the store was constructed, a line of trees was planted using a full GreenBlue Urban system that protected a generous volume of uncompacted soil.

This setup enabled the young trees to develop wide and healthy root networks, maintain natural moisture balance and thrive without the need for intensive maintenance. The comparison between 2015 and 2024 highlights the effectiveness of this approach, with the trees now forming a strong green canopy that enhances both the store frontage and the wider streetscape.

Their steady and dependable growth demonstrates the value of well designed soil systems in creating durable and attractive urban environments that continue to improve over time.

As cities intensify their focus on climate resilience and liveability, the industry is once again confronting a central truth. Urban trees only thrive when the soil beneath them is able to function as nature intended.

From root performance and moisture balance to carbon efficiency and long-term maintenance outcomes, the evidence points in the same direction. Soil structure matters. When the entire rooting volume remains aerated, biologically active and unrestricted, trees grow faster, withstand stress more effectively and require far less intervention over their lifetime.

Projects that prioritise open, uncompacted soil volumes consistently show stronger establishment and more even canopy development. Across sites where these conditions are maintained, trees continue to thrive many years after planting, demonstrating the lasting value of preserving natural soil structure.

If urban trees are expected to deliver long term climate, ecological and social value, the soil systems beneath them must be grounded in science. Getting the soil right at the outset remains one of the most important factors for lasting success.
