Once in a decade snowstorm (probably most in my 18 years on the beach). Thyme loves the chilly white blanket, not sure about the pointed head cabbage. We’ll see. Also made the boogie board trail down the path for Oliver’s first ‘real’ snow.

Nice surprise this morning as I headed out to make a dent in the weeds and fall clean out. The saffron crocuses came up after all. I was a bit worried not seeing them come up by end of October, but they’re here now! Dropped all other plans to harvest what I could, after leaning the hard way last year the window is quite narrow, especially if there’s any rain forecast. Also have a greater appreciation for why it’s the most expensive spice after spending better part of an hour to yield a gram or two. Might get same amount tomorrow or next day with my little helper!

Haven’t had as much time for gardening exploits now that I’m back running a kitchen , but have a few fun things going this season, and have a great crowd that enjoy the fruits of my labor. This week’s tapas is inspired by and the team . Much of what I have been doing in my garden has been inspired by the chefs garden. Squash blossoms from costata Romanesco zucchini and dragon tail radishes have been a great success again this year and last of this years harvest will be enjoyed tomorrow!

Been a while since I shared some garden pics. Now that I’m back running a kitchen full time, the garden has taken a slight back seat. Still have plenty tomatoes, basil, okra and radishes going, and one of my favs, costata Romanesco squash, the variety grown for blossom harvesting, as it produces about 10 male blossoms for every fruit producing female. Will stuffing and serving these up at the club!

We have our second round of plantings ready for open house and plant sale this Saturday 5/21 from 10-2. Like with many of us, that long nor’easter wreaked havoc on many of out first round plantings, so it’s a great time to replenish the damage. We have over a dozen varieties of basil, two dozen types of tomatoes, along with rare finds like summer-loving Vietnamese coriander, borage, Shish*to peppers and more. 109 Light Keepers Way.

Ollie, Amelia and I welcome you our garden tomorrow 11-3 for open house and plant sale. Speaking of plants, turns out Ollie likes elephant garlic scapes…and getting wet, and dirty, and going to the neighbors when we’re not looking. He’ll be the one with bells on his shoes so we can keep track of him.

Open House (garden) and Plant Sale! This Saturday 4/30 11am-3pm. Basil (16 varieties), nasturtiums, thyme, mint, Carolina Pineberries (beginning to fruit), more! Everything potted in CowPots for easier transplanting (and provides natural fertilizer). Very limited tomatoes this round due to greenhouse mishap, but will have more than two dozen varieties in a few weeks. Free radishes for those that would like. Park at end of cup-de-sac or along road at 109 Light Keepers Way only (and watch for children).

French thyme, sage and Carolina pine berries in full bloom this Easter Sunday. Ollie seems@much more interested in the bright orange kumquats in the greenhouse than fake plastic eggs!

Going vertical with the Carolina Pineberries, a variety of white strawberry. These are all from runners from last years plants. Each of the four towers holds 20 plants in Less than 4 square feet of space. And being off the ground, hopefully the ants won’t get most of them like last year!

Loving the signs of Spring, from blooming Asian Pear, first leaf break of the fig trees, ramps emerging, and of course all the seed starts in the greenhouse with somebody who is just learning to pull weeds.
