What Is a “Lifetime” Pipe Flashing?

A few days ago, we shared a video about failures of the commonly used cheap pipe flashings—and why we prefer something better.

Someone asked, “What do Lifetime pipe flashings look like?”

In this video, we’re showing the Ultimate Pipe Flashing by Lifetime Tool & Building Products.

We’ll also show examples from our jobs, including damage caused by a deteriorated flashing.

The standard Ultimate Pipe Flashing features a galvanized steel base with a durable Kynar® paint finish, providing excellent protection against the elements. For coastal applications where additional corrosion resistance is important, we use the 316L marine-grade stainless steel version.

Cheap flashings may look fine at first, but when the rubber gasket deteriorates, water can eventually get into the roof system and cause damage to the decking and framing.

That’s why we prefer using the Ultimate Pipe Flashing whenever possible. It features a durable silicone seal and compression collar designed to maintain a watertight seal—and is guaranteed to remain watertight for the life of the roof when properly installed.

What We Found Underneath

Here’s another look at the roof we’re working on in Kinston today, and this video really shows why we believe a roof should be properly inspected before simply covering the existing roof with another material.

This roof was originally constructed with manufactured trusses spaced 24 inches on center and had ½-inch plywood decking installed without plywood clips. When you combine wider truss spacing with thinner decking, you have a roof deck that simply doesn’t provide the same solid feel and structural support as a properly upgraded decking system.

And once we opened this roof up, we found areas of deterioration, delamination, and plywood that wasn’t properly supported on the rafters.

Rather than covering those problems up, we’re correcting them.

We’re going back with 3/4-inch plywood decking, giving us a substantially more solid and structurally sound surface to build the new roofing system on.

We’re also correcting the ventilation system by installing Deck-Air® ventilation products on this clerestory style roof. Correct installation of this product near the bottom and top of each slope will provide proper intake ventilation and exhaust ventilation.

This is exactly why we are not fans of simply installing a metal roof over an existing shingle roof. You don't know what’s underneath until you actually expose it.

When we replace a roof, our goal isn’t just to make it look good from the ground. We want to make sure what’s underneath it is solid, properly supported, properly ventilated, and built to last.

What’s Underneath Matters

We’re starting another roof here in Kinston this morning, and this one is a perfect example of why we’re not big fans of installing a metal roof directly over an existing shingle roof.

The problem is simple: you don’t know what’s underneath.

During our initial inspection, we were able to see from inside the attic that there was significant deterioration in the plywood sheathing, along with some other major issues.

So, we’re going to do this one the right way. We’ll remove the metal roof, remove the existing shingles, and replace all of the roof sheathing so we have a solid, properly prepared substrate before installing the new asphalt shingle roof system. This is a great example of why a proper inspection—and knowing what’s underneath your roof—matters.

Final Walkthrough — Another Ironclad Roof Done Right

And that’s a wrap on this one! 🔨🏠

As I make the final walkthrough, you can see just how much this roof system has been transformed. We rebuilt the boxing around the chimney, corrected the ventilation issues, wrapped everything back up, including the soffit and fascia metal, and reset the gutter.

Once I get up on the roof, you can really see the finished product. That Desert Rose Owens Corning shingle is a beautiful color! We also properly installed the chimney flashing, clipped at the bottom and tucked into the mortar joints. Also we installed Lifetime Ultimate pipe flashings.

But one of the biggest improvements is something you may not notice at first glance — look at how flat and straight this roof is now. Before we started, there were dips, sags, and uneven areas throughout the roof system. By sistering the rafters, rebuilding and resheathing the affected areas, and correcting the ventilation, we were able to get this roof back where it needed to be.

And we finished just in time. We got everything buttoned up, dried in, and completed just before the rainstorms rolled in. There’s nothing better than seeing a project like this finished and knowing the homeowner is protected before the next round of weather arrives. 🌧️💪

The result is a properly built, properly ventilated roof system that should provide this homeowner with many years of reliable, trouble-free service.

Follow-Up: Building It Right From the Inside Out

This roof has been a great example of why proper ventilation and proper installation matter.

We’ve got the framing around the chimney completely rebuilt, and we’re also correcting the ventilation system. We’ve removed the vinyl soffit so we could open up the plywood soffit underneath and create the proper intake ventilation this roof system was missing.

Up on the roof, we’re installing new 26-gauge galvalume chimney flashing, getting the shingles installed, and bringing this roof back together the right way.

And I’ve got to say—the Owens Corning Duration in Desert Rose looks fantastic on this house. It really complements the home.

We also covered the entire roof deck with ice and water barrier, followed by synthetic underlayment. That synthetic underlayment provides a separation layer between the ice and water barrier and the shingles. Without that separation, the shingles can bond directly to the ice and water barrier, which can make the next roof replacement a much bigger job—and potentially mean replacing plywood all over again.

That’s exactly what we’re dealing with on this roof.

Our goal is to correct the underlying ventilation problems now so that 25–30 years down the road, when it’s time for the next roof, they should be able to strip the shingles and install the new roofing system without having to replace the plywood all over again.

This is part of our Owens Corning Preferred Roofing System, including our Lifetime Ultimate Pipe Flashings and the components needed to build a complete roofing system—not just put shingles over a problem.

We’re not just putting a roof on this house. We are correcting the problems, rebuilding it right, and building it to protect.

Here’s the latest update on this roof!

We’ve got the majority of the rafters sistered, some of the damaged sheathing replaced, and all the framing around the chimney rebuilt and ready to be sheeted and dried in. We’ve also got a couple of sections of the roof almost completely shingled back in.

And we’re trying out a new color for us—Owens Corning Duration in Desert Rose. 🔨🏠 I’ve got to say, it’s a really good-looking color, and I think it’s going to look great on this house!

It’s been a windy one today, so the goal is to get everything dried in before we call it a day—get the repairs finished, get the sheathing replaced, and get this roof protected for the night.

Then we’ll finish it up tomorrow. 💪

When We Opened This Roof Up…

When we first inspected this roof, we already knew we had some issues around the chimney. There was deteriorated framing and sheathing that would need to be removed and replaced, along with some of the overhang.

We also noticed a lot of ups and downs, dips and sags across the main roof. Our initial plan was to replace some of the damaged plywood and sister some of the rafters to help straighten things out.

But once we tore the roof off, we discovered the bigger problem.

This roof wasn’t breathing.

This home has cathedral ceilings, and the insulation was packed tightly into the rafter cavities. There were no proper ventilation baffles to allow air to flow from the eaves up through the roof and exhaust through the ridge.

That lack of airflow contributed to moisture problems and delaminated sheathing.

This is exactly why we believe a roof replacement should be about more than just tearing off shingles and putting new ones on.

At Ironclad Roofing, we inspect the entire roof system and make recommendations based on what the home actually needs. Our goal is to correct the underlying problems before we install the new roof—not cover them up.

We’re going to correct the ventilation issues, repair the damaged framing and sheathing, and build this roof back the way it should have been built in the first place.

Because a new roof should be more than new shingles.

It should be a solid roof system built to last.

Yesterday we gave you a peak at the start of this kitchen remodel. Today, we're one step closer.

Our friend Ronnie at 1st Choice Drywall & Ceiling Repair came in and knocked the drywall out of the park. Quality work like this keeps a project moving in the right direction and sets the stage for a beautiful finished kitchen.

As you'll see in the video, the new cabinets have also been delivered and are on site. That's a big milestone, and now we're ready to move into the next phase of bringing this space back to life.

We're excited to keep this transformation moving forward and can't wait to show you the finished result. Stay tuned... there's a lot more to come!

We don't do many interior remodels, but every now and then we make an exception.

After finishing this customer's new deck, they told us about the struggles they'd had trying to get their kitchen remodel completed. Since we were already there and had built a good relationship, we agreed to help them get it across the finish line.

This is just a quick progress update. It's coming together, and we're looking forward to showing you the finished kitchen soon. While roofing, siding, windows, doors, gutters, and decks are still our primary focus, projects like this are a great way to stay productive on rainy days and help good customers when they need us.
