If you have marble in your kitchen, you've probably seen it: a cloudy ring where a glass of w**e or a lemon wedge sat a little too long. It looks like a stain. It isn't.

That's an etch. The acid reacts with the calcium in the stone and dissolves the polished finish. Marble, limestone, travertine and onyx are all susceptible. Granite mostly isn't.

The part most people don't expect: sealing doesn't prevent it. A good sealer slows liquids from soaking in, which protects against stains. Etching happens on the surface.

What helps: trays and coasters at the bar and coffee station, wiping up acids quickly, and pH-neutral cleaners only.

What fixes it: professional refinishing.

Worth knowing before the cranberry sauce and cocktails come out next month.

Not every stone surface is straightforward.

This sink is a good example.

There are horizontal surfaces, vertical surfaces, inside corners, edges and transitions, all within one small area. When stone like this needs restoration or maintenance, those details matter just as much as the material itself.

It’s also why we look at the entire installation before deciding how a surface should be approached.

Setting: Exterior kitchen
Exposure: Weather + everyday use

On site:
• Checking the overall condition of the stone
• Looking at how the finish is wearing
• Noting changes across high-use and exposed areas
• Checking for staining, surface wear and previous treatments
• Documenting the condition before recommending any restoration or maintenance

Exterior stone has a different set of variables than the stone we see indoors. Sun, rain, temperature changes and regular use all become part of the assessment.

The first step is figuring out what the stone is telling us.

Protecting the surrounding space, understanding the condition of the stone, choosing the right approach, and carefully working through the restoration are all part of the process.

For us, a great result isn’t only about how the stone looks when we leave. It’s also about how we care for the space while we’re there.
