OBX Native Plants A place to share information about all the wonderful native plants that help make the OBX special!

Most of all, I want to provide practical information about how to create yards that support native wildlife and maintain our Sense of Place:)

No need to give up on your garden just because it’s fall! There are sooo many plants that bloom through October, and still lots of bugs out there that need them.

What: plant sale fundraiser(note: just a handful of plants of each species offered). Proceeds for Friends of Jockey's Ridge.
When: Sunday Oct 04, 8AM-till we run out (or the weather turns too bad!)
Where: Waveriders Coffee Shop in Nags Head (look for us under the covered area!)

Sooo....Looking at the forecast for Sunday, I am thinking it makes sense to start earlier rather than later. I will plan to be set up by 8 (there is a covered area- to the west/right side of the main entrance door) and hope to see you there! It will be a smallish sale, but I'll be bringing a few other fun things to sell to help raise funds, and also am happy to answer any questions! Also, I will keep a list of requests for future sales:)

I will post a full list of what I am bringing, how many of each, etc later today. In the meantime, a few of the "showy in fall" options pictured. Thanks!

Plant Pickup Update: Sunday, October 4th at Waveriders Coffee Shop in Nags Head is going to be the pickup and location for the fall plant division sale! Read below for more details:

I am offering a selection of recently potted native plants for sale this fall. They will be offered for suggested donation...basically I would like to cover the costs of soil and water, and any proceeds beyond that will be donated to the Friends of Jockey's Ridge.

Offerings include the following native perennials: Blue Star (Amsonia), Oakleaf Fleabane (Erigeron), Carolina Jessamine (Gelsimium), Lyreleaf Sage (Salvia), Blue Violet (Viola), Late Purple Aster, Aromatic Aster, Sleeping Hibiscus (Malvaviscus), Native Poinsettia/Fire on the Mtn (Euphorbia), Sweet Goldenrod (Solidago odora), Little Bluestem, Joe Bell/ Blanketflower (Gaillardia), Blue Curls (Trichostema), Hyssop-leaf Boneset (Eupatorium hyssopifolium), Coastal Plain Joe-Pye (Eutrochium), Sweet Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia subtomentosa), Savannah Blazing Star (Liatris scariosa), Grass leaf Aster (Pityopsis graminifolia), and False Indigo Bush (Amorpha).

These are a mix of potted plugs, divisions from my yard, and recently seeded plants.

More notes: I have thought a lot about plant distribution over the years. Folks that garden always have extras to giveaway...but doing so in an organized fashion that results in the highest plant survival (and doesn't cost an arm and a leg!) is the tricky part. Getting the plants dug and potted at the right time of year for planting, making sure they are cared for until they can be distributed, and making sure they have enough value to the person that takes them that they don't die in a pot in their driveway (which is so hard for me to watch!). While at the same time just wanting the share and get everyone planting šŸ¤” ...it's a tricky balance! So thanks to everyone for bearing with me while I experiment with trying to find the best way to do this, and hopefully can "grow" it for the future!

Please message me with any requests and reservations, and I will hold things aside for anyone who has made a request- noting that all supplies are limited. I will also make a list on day of for requests for the future...trying to focus on those species that are hard or impossible to find locally! If all goes well I can try it again in the spring.

I will share some more things, including pick up times, between now and Oct 04. In the meantime (if you have read this far!), check out the pictures for some of the species offered...

Peaky’s had so much fun being a pup influencer this year that he almost forgot his Anniversary! Can’t believe he’s been running the household since 2021….
He also said there’s a lot of pressure being a pupfluencer, but he has a few more ideas for posts as we head into Fall. Stay tuned! Nature Out Loud!

I love this vine as much as Peaky and don’t know why it’s not utilized more! Drought tolerant, grows in sand, blooms profusely even in shade, and loved by bees (like the American bumble bee pictured here). Also host plant for long tailed and silver spotted skippers. If there’s some in your yard, or edges of your property, preserve it please! šŸ™

Public service announcement: most pesticide labels indicate that you should spray for thing h the morning or the evening to avoid harming ā€œbeneficialsā€. I’m not sure what they are basing this on as these are often the busiest time of day in my garden šŸ¤” during the heat of summer in the south. My 2 cents: when is the best time to spray… ? …never!! There are many alternatives to coexisting with the bugs we label as pests that don’t involve spraying pesticides. šŸ¾šŸ¾ā¤ļøā¤ļø

As Pollinator Week wraps up, i wanted to remind everyone that in our quest to ā€œcreateā€ Pollinator Gardens, it’s important not to overlook the plants in our yards that we didn’t purposefully put there. We like to call them weeds, and while sometimes they are, other times they are just plants that’s aren’t as conventionally attractive to us humans, but are often more so to the many insects that depend on them. Sometimes all we really need to do is just leave things alone and pay attention to what’s already there šŸ Here are just a few growing wild in the roadside in Buxton, NC. What wildlife friendly natives might be volunteering in your own yard that you’ve overlooked?
