GreenWeaver Landscapes Healthy Land, Beautiful Landscapes
Ecological landscape design, installation, and garden maintenance GreenWeaver Landscapes was born from that principle.

In 2008, Greg and Jennifer Nichols decided that it was time for landscape practices to give more back to the environment. Some of our standard landscape practices include installing native plants, designing to keep stormwater on site, and reducing fertilizer and chemical use. This Wayne Cottage Garden shows how thoughtful design can completely change the way a backyard feels.

A white picket fence divides the large yard into two distinct spaces, creating a more intimate cottage garden closer to the home while preserving a larger open area beyond. A vine-covered arbor connects the two, and natural stonework helps give the landscape structure and character.

It’s a great reminder that landscape design isn’t only about choosing plants—it’s also about shaping how you move through, experience, and use your outdoor space.

If you’ve been thinking about reworking your own yard, this is a great time of year to start planning the layout, materials, and planting design so everything is ready to come together next season.

A beautiful estate landscape starts with understanding the property as a whole.

For this Chesapeake project, the spectacular water views shaped many of the design decisions. The goal was to add texture, color, and a sense of enclosure close to the home without blocking those expansive views—while also creating functional spaces for play, gathering, and relaxing by the pool.

Large planting beds, open turf areas, and carefully selected plantings all work together to make the property feel cohesive, comfortable, and connected to its surroundings. Behind the scenes, the project also involved coordination with architects, stormwater and civil engineers, and natural resource requirements to make sure every piece worked together.

Projects like this take thoughtful planning long before installation begins. If you’re imagining changes to your property for next year, fall is a great time to start the conversation with GreenWeaver and begin shaping the possibilities.

It is aster season! And there is almost certainly a native aster that will work on your property. Tall or diminutive, sun or shade, asters provide important late-season nectar for pollinators, and add a dimension of color to the fall landscape. Pictured are:

Aster ericoides 'Snow Flurry',
Aster oblongifolius 'October Skies'
Aster cordifolius 'Avondale'
Aster divaricatus 'Eastern Star'

Fall is a great time to think ahead for the birds you hope to welcome in spring!

Bluebirds are beautiful, beneficial visitors that can help bring more life and movement to the landscape. While they are often associated with spring, preparing your property now can make a difference when nesting season returns.

If you have the right site, such as an open meadow, naturalized stormwater basin, corporate campus, or larger open landscape, a properly placed bluebird nest box can provide valuable nesting habitat. Fall is also a good time to clean and repair existing boxes, reduce pesticide use, add native plants, and make sure your landscape offers food, water, and shelter for birds throughout the seasons.

Even if your property is not ideal for bluebirds, these same steps can help attract and support many other feathered friends.

Cooler evenings are a reminder of how special outdoor spaces can be when they’re designed for gathering.

Fire features add warmth, ambiance, and a natural reason to spend more time outside — whether you’re hosting friends, roasting marshmallows, or simply enjoying a quiet evening by the fire.

They can be designed close to the house for convenience or placed farther into the landscape to create a cozy destination space. With the right layout, seating, materials, and plantings, an outdoor fireplace or fire pit can feel both functional and beautifully connected to the rest of your yard.

Fall is also a great time to start thinking ahead. If you’re dreaming of a more inviting outdoor space for next year, now is the time to begin planning.

Nothing is more important than having clean water to drink. By VOTING YES, we can protect Delco's water by preventing runoff and toxic chemicals from flowing into Delaware County’s water supply.

Pruning in fall helps prep your landscape for winter — but timing and technique matter.

Here’s a quick guide:
✅ DO:
🌱Remove dead, diseased, or damaged branches.
🌱Cut back spent perennials after frost to prevent pests.
🌱Lightly thin shrubs if they’re overcrowded.
🌱Keep tools sharp and switch hands to avoid strain.

❌ DON’T:
🍃Heavily prune trees and shrubs (wait until late winter/early spring).
🍃Shear evergreens — you’ll risk winter burn.
🍃Overdo it in one day — spread tasks out to protect your body.
🍃Forget safety: gloves, eye protection, and good posture go a long way.

A beautiful landscape does not happen overnight.

The best outdoor spaces begin with thoughtful planning — understanding how you want to use the property, how people will move through it, what plants will thrive there, and how each element can work together over time.

That is why fall and winter can be such valuable seasons for landscape design. While the garden is quieter, there is time to evaluate the space, identify what is working, and plan for improvements before the busy spring season begins.

Starting the design process now allows room for intentional decisions around layout, plant selection, materials, drainage, sustainability, and long-term maintenance. The result is a landscape that feels cohesive, functional, and deeply connected to the property.

If you are hoping to make meaningful changes to your outdoor space next year, now is a great time to begin thinking through the possibilities!
