This is a typical French drain we encounter at many homes that performs poorly. Pipe perforated at random. Not enough holes. Holes pointing up. Shallow trench. Narrow trench. Contaminated stone. Wrong fabric or no fabric. No pipe glue. It takes too much hard work to dig a worthy trench to cut corners after the digging!

The large amount of crushed limestone we use is a big contributor to the success of our French drains. The goal is to create a lot of air space underground for the water to spread out in. Another way to achieve this is to use multiple perorated pipes in the trench and less rock would be needed.

This trench is the beginning of our French drain. It wraps the back of the house and extends all the way to the sidewalk. Pretty soon this home will have dry yard and maximum protection against flooding. 💧⛈️☔️

This is a good example of the French drains we find that are in place but not helping. This one was so near to the surface and was connected to a tee at the bottom of a downspout, problems were guaranteed! The perforated pipe extended about 8 ‘ and ended at the back door. This is a big reason this home would get so much water threatening intrusion via the back door. The water that come from the downspout is literally given zero direction with the tee at the bottom. No surprise the water would flow out the perforated pipe and begin flooding the back of the house. We’re fixing this! 💧☔️⛈️

This home would flood downstairs during hard New Orleans rains. The existing drainage system was completely clogged and the pavers were sloped towards the house just enough to send water that direction. We stacked the pavers for a future project and then installed a French drain and extended the downspouts to the curb. This home is far better protected from flooding. 💧⛈️☔️

Here’s a much improved driveway and walkway! Both are permeable and allow the rainwater to infiltrate back into the soil. This helps keep some of the runoff out of the street.💧☔️⛈️

Went back to check on this crushed limestone we glued in place last week. Yep, it is solid and no kicking is going to scatter those little stones. 😉
