Today started off a little different when I found we caught something cool in the crab trap. Crabbing in Louisiana is some of the best around!

This backyard has settled about 8” over about 20 years and this has caused the drainage pipes to drop also. So when it rains, the water collected from the downspouts would flow towards the backyard and flood it instead of draining forward to the front of the house and draining towards the lawn or street. We raised the pipes and packed them in earth. Soon the backyard will be renovated and raised to meet the drainage pipe inlets. No more flooding! 💧⛈️☔️

In Mandeville this home would collect rain water by the front door. The water was runoff from within the garden bed. We installed a short section of French drain between the house and the walkway and then installed a discharge pipe between the walkway and the street side ditch. All went excellent! No more pooling water by the front door. ✅

We like to clean our rock to lose as many fines and small stone as possible. It keeps our drainage rock’s infiltration rate exceptionally high. We probably should send it to a lab to know how much faster it is after we clean it.

Sometimes we tackle projects that aren’t our typical projects and here’s one of them, making an attempt to improve the look of these bricks a bit.

This home was having yard drainage problems along the back of the house. We excavated and installed a French drain along the back and left side of the house, ending at the sidewalk. The downspouts were piped separately and now extend to the sidewalk as well. We left the top of the French drain open along the back of the house where infiltration rate is needed most to quickly move the water from the surface of the lawn into the drainage system. The rest of it was covered with sand and sod. Once the lawn grows back in it will look great and be nice and dry. 💧⛈️☔️

This is a typical French drain we encounter at many homes that performs poorly. Pipe perforated at random. Not enough holes. Holes pointing up. Shallow trench. Narrow trench. Contaminated stone. Wrong fabric or no fabric. No pipe glue. It takes too much hard work to dig a worthy trench to cut corners after the digging!

The large amount of crushed limestone we use is a big contributor to the success of our French drains. The goal is to create a lot of air space underground for the water to spread out in. Another way to achieve this is to use multiple perorated pipes in the trench and less rock would be needed.
