Not always. A leak can come from flashing, vents, penetrations, or a small damaged section of the roof. The first step is figuring out where the water is actually getting in before assuming you need a full replacement.

Your roof has one job: keep water out. But doing that takes an entire system working together.

Shingles shed water. Underlayment provides a secondary barrier. Flashing protects the most vulnerable transitions around walls, valleys, vents, and chimneys. Proper ventilation helps control heat and moisture inside the attic.

In DFW, that system also has to handle extreme heat, UV exposure, rapid temperature changes, high winds, and hail, all of which can weaken materials and create openings long before you ever see a leak inside.

That’s why a roof can look fine from the ground and still have issues worth catching early.
