Brian Peterson of the University of Nebraska at Kearney collected 113 matched sets of shed antlers with known distances between the two sides. This illustration from our recent article gives you a visual of how they spread out.
The greatest distance between a matched set was 1,144 meters (1,251 yards). Most of them were found very close to each other, with half (56) of the pairs lying up to 10 meters apart. Another 27 pairs were found 10 to 100 meters apart. As you’d expect, fewer matches were found as separation distances get longer, with only seven matched pairs separated by more than 500 meters.
