Another one bites the dust for stealing, allegedly (innocent until proven guilty, or that oh so sweet plea deal)…This industry is a cesspool of a lack of accountability and zero barriers to entry! I am admittedly not a great “salesman” or someone who “can sell ice to an Eskimo “; but I try my best to be the best for those I serve whether it was in law enforcement, this roofing industry, or those that are around me or have to put up with me on a daily basis.
1) Look out for yourself and your neighbors. Just because someone can sell you something; it’s not a representation of character or a measure of integrity.
2) This industry uses all sorts of disclaimers in order to build false rapport to lower your guard and mislead you into signing contracts…
Examples:
-First Responders Cops/Medics/Fire/Dispatch ( Don’t hesitate to ask the tough clarifying questions…Are you currently a member? And if not did you leave in good standing? There are members of every faction, in this area, that may have had the honor to walk in those shoes but they lost it for dishonesty or behavior that tarnished the community trust and lost the luxury to put themselves in the same category). Without hesitation and an abundance of pride I can answer those questions, and so should others if they’re legit.
-Faith (God is apart of my everyday life, but unless you outright bring up my faith I’m going to speak about roofing. Jesus was nailed to the cross, which has nothing to do with the nails used on your shingles; I just hope to make you and him proud with how I handled your exterior needs).
-Military membership (same examples as First Responders, with the addition of stolen valor)
-Civic involvement. It’s a great thing for every industry, and should be way more of it. Maybe on this example, intensions don’t matter if it benefits those in need to an extent… but make no mistake donations and promotions don’t equate to quality, character, or history of said company/individual. This is exactly why any director or board of non profits I have personal involvement with has been encouraged over the years to never directly share or promote me or my company (outside of shout outs or public sponsorship acknowledgment if they choose to or is part of their normal day to day) because I never want to expose them to uncomfortable situations where they don’t have personal relationships and accountability of all members of a company or be put in a position to promote any random entity because they brought money to the table.
3) Financial stability- Harder to verify on an individual level with a company representative because we all don’t have our credit score and true intentions tattooed on our foreheads. However if it feels rushed, pitched, or greasy; always go with your gut! This business is ironic in the sense that the general public on a daily basis will take home, insurance, and financial advise from a large percentage of individuals in this field that have never owned a home, have home owner’s insurance, and can’t manage personal finances. Don’t fall victim to the sales bro/sis that’s been trained to “turn that no into a yes!”. From a company side it’s easy, if you’re suspicious or not and just practicing due diligence, ask for referrals and references, call material distributors and ask if a company has paid their bills or if their a problem. Around here it’s super easy ABC Supply, American Roofing Supply (SRS), Menards, Builders Warehouse, Mead Lumber (all local stores linked), Home Depot, and all local lumber stores would love to tell you that someone isn’t paying their bills; and if a material distributor says they can’t tell you, I strongly recommend making whatever individual you are going to do business with call them in front of you to get that confirmation! It’s not a secret, or construction HIPAA like they have in healthcare; you either pay your bills or don’t…
Whew…that was a lot of heavy stuff and lengthy for a Monday night, and only a few examples to safeguard one another. Look out for yourself and others.
Hugs, Not Drugs!
