In the heat of summer the irrigation schedule for the lawn should change from cooler and moister times. In general, for a bluegrass lawn, 1 inch of water per week is needed for April and May, 1 and 1/4 inches for June and 1 ½ for July and August. A tall fescue lawn can get by on roughly half to two thirds of these amounts. To determine how much water is being applied when you water, whether it’s an in-ground or a hose attachment system, place several empty tuna cans in the lawn, then run your system for 15 minutes. Increase or decrease the runtime of the system accordingly to deliver the desired amount. Subtract natural rainfall from the weekly requirement. While the system is running, look for any issues such as water spraying into the street, bent risers and heads that don’t turn.
