NEIGHBORHOOD NOTICE: FREE Emergency Tarping & Board-Up Safety Guide 🛠️
Our hearts go out to everyone in our community recovering from the recent storms. As you begin assessing your property, the top priority is to keep your family safe and prevent further damage.
Whether you're tackling temporary repairs yourself or working with a contractor, here are essential steps to secure your home properly and protect your insurance claim:
📸 1. Document EVERYTHING First
Take clear photos and videos of all roof and window damage before placing any tarps or boards. Your insurance adjuster will need proof of the original damage.
Roof Safety & Tarping Tips
Never climb on a roof during high winds, active storms, or if you suspect structural damage. Always work with a partner on the ground.
Avoid nailing directly through the tarp or shingles! Roll the tarp edges around 2x4s and screw the boards down to create a tight, wind-resistant seal.
Extend the tarp over the peak (ridge) of the roof whenever possible so water flows over it, rather than underneath.
2. Boarding Up Doors & Windows
Use 5/8-inch exterior-grade plywood.
Avoid duct tape or thin plastic sheeting. High winds will pull them right off. Anchor plywood securely into the outer frame using 3-inch exterior screws.
3. Quick Indoor Water Relief
If water is pooling behind drywall and causing your ceiling to bubble, place a bucket underneath and carefully poke a small hole in the center with a screwdriver. This safely releases trapped water before the whole panel collapses.
Always turn off the power at the breaker panel if water is near electrical outlets or light fixtures!
Insurance Tip: Save ALL receipts for tarps, wood, hardware, or professional help. Emergency measures are typically covered under the "Reasonable Mitigation" clause of your homeowner's policy.
