Hey, Is This Normal?
If you're asking this question while looking at your roof, the answer is probably no. Recently, we inspected a roof where the shingles at the perimeter were so poorly installed that we could literally peel them up like a banana. This isn't just a minor issueโit's a major red flag.
What Went Wrong Here
Installed Over Old Shingles: The new roof was laid directly over the existing one without proper tear-off. While some contractors push this to save money, it's almost always a bad idea.
Shortcuts Everywhere: This was clearly built with the lowest bid in mind, with no regard for quality or longevity.
Why Roofing Over Old Shingles Fails ๐
Many homeowners are tempted by the lower price of installing over existing shingles, but here's what you're really getting:
- Hidden damage that only gets worse under your new roof
- Double the weight stressing your structure beyond its design limits
- 20-30% shorter lifespan compared to proper installation
- Voided warranties from shingle manufacturers
- Higher future costs when you eventually have to remove two layers instead of one
Beyond shingles that peel like fruit, watch for:
Visible waves, bumps, or sagging
Lifted or curling shingles (especially at edges)
Exposed or overdriven nails
Inconsistent shingle lines
Missing drip edge or starter strips
Should You Repair or Replace?
When the entire installation is compromisedโlike our banana-peel roofโrepairs are just throwing money at a failing system. A complete tear-off and proper reinstallation is the only real solution.
A proper roof replacement includes:
Complete tear-off to bare deck
Deck inspection and repair
Quality underlayment and ice/water shield
Proper drip edge and starter strips
Shingles installed to manufacturer specs
Adequate ventilation
Bottom Line
Your roof is your home's primary protection. A properly installed roof costs more upfront but lasts decades and actually protects your investment.
