Award Spotlight | Harvey Dutton Lofts

Harvey Dutton Lofts received a Historic Kansas City Preservation Award for Thoughtful Rehabilitation, recognizing the impact adaptive reuse and historic preservation continues to have on downtown Kansas City.

Originally home to the Harvey-Dutton Dry Goods Company, the historic Garment District building was thoughtfully transformed into residential and commercial space while preserving the character and history that make the neighborhood unique.

Today, Harvey Dutton Lofts is also home to businesses like Veil and Something Good, with micro-office and retail spaces currently available. If you’re interested in joining the growing downtown community, we’d love to connect!

We're proud to have been featured in The Kansas City Star for our latest historic redevelopment project in downtown KC.

The George B. Peck Dry Goods building, a 12-story landmark built in 1914, is set to be transformed into a mixed-use space. This space will feature 74 apartments, over 10,000 square feet of commercial space, and modern amenities like a fitness center and rooftop area.

This project continues our commitment to preserving Kansas City’s architectural history while creating spaces that support the city’s future growth. From Petticoat Lane to Main Street’s next chapter, we’re honored to be part of the story!

Throwing it back to a great moment celebrating the 2901 Forest Townhomes. 🥂

Earlier this year we gathered with partners, community members, and supporters for the ribbon cutting and champagne pop marking an exciting milestone for these townhomes. 2901 Forest Ave represents the kind of work we care deeply about at Exact Architects, which is thoughtful design that helps bring new housing and new energy to Kansas City neighborhoods.

Grateful for everyone who helped make this project possible and excited for what’s ahead.

We’re excited to see momentum building around the ABC and Anderson buildings near Linwood and Main!

Exact Architects has filed plans to transform these historically significant structures, originally built in 1908 and 1911, into 52 new loft residences with ground-floor activation, a rooftop lounge, basement speakeasy, and coffee shop. The project is designed to bring approximately 100 new residents to this stretch of midtown.

As Caleb Buland, managing partner at Exact Architects, shared, utility and interior demolition work is already underway, with full construction expected to begin in the spring ahead of a summer 2027 opening. The timing is intentional. The goal was to bring the project online once the streetcar extension is fully operational, reinforcing long-term urban connectivity.

Affordability is central to the vision. The lofts are aimed at residents earning below 80 percent of area median income, ensuring growth along Main Street remains accessible and inclusive.

Once listed among Kansas City’s most endangered buildings, the ABC and Anderson structures are now positioned for a new chapter through historic tax credits and thoughtful redevelopment strategy. It’s a strong example of preservation and progress working together.

She leads operations, project ex*****on, and asset stabilization across multiple properties, guiding projects through complex regulatory, financial, and construction phases with focus and precision. A graduate of Rockhurst University with a Master’s degree, she continues to help shape thoughtful development that strengthens our city.

Exact Architects is in the process of reimagining the historic 929 Walnut Street building.

A 1922 structure rooted in the fabric of downtown Kansas City’s walkable urban core. Built as a commercial office building nearly a century ago, 929 Walnut is now being thoughtfully converted into luxury residential lofts with engaging ground-floor spaces that add to the street-level vitality of the district. By preserving and celebrating the building’s historic character while introducing modern design and amenities, Exact ensures this landmark continues to contribute to the life of the city well into the future.
