Every one of us can remember a teacher who made a difference — someone who took the time to understand us, encouraged us to discover our strengths, or sparked a passion that stayed with us long after we left their classroom.

That’s one of the reasons education architecture is so meaningful to us. Another year, another great morning supporting students across Shawnee Mission School District! 💙

Our team was proud to join SMSD for the annual SMEF Fall Breakfast alongside our friends at RTM Engineering. What started as a great event has quickly become a tradition we look forward to each year — a chance to spend time with good friends, connect with the SMSD community, and celebrate the incredible things happening across the district.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to support a district that continues to invest in its students, educators and communities. Thank you to the SMEF team for another inspiring morning!

On this day, Maryville R-II School District celebrated the completion of a new Performing Arts Center at Maryville High School—creating a state-of-the-art home for the fine arts and placing student talent front and center.⁠
⁠
Incite Design Studio partnered with the District to design significant additions to the high school while also helping spearhead the successful bond campaign approved by voters in April 2014. The centerpiece of the improvements was the 20,000-square-foot Performing Arts Center, featuring a 700-seat auditorium designed to support performances and community events throughout the year.⁠
⁠
Finely tuned for both music and the spoken word, the auditorium includes a full fly space, multiple catwalks, professional rigging and lighting, and a recessed orchestra pit with safety netting. A welcoming pre-function area with concessions, a ticket window, and restrooms complements the performance space, while a scene shop and dedicated performer amenities support productions behind the scenes.⁠

The completed facility gave Maryville students a high-quality environment in which to perform, create, and share their talents while providing the broader community with an exceptional gathering place.⁠

On this day in 2021, Phase 1 renovations were completed at the Mid-America Sports Complex, beginning a major transformation of the 12-field baseball and softball destination.⁠
⁠
Incite Design Studio partnered with landscape architect Vance Rzepka of VSR Design to develop an overall improvement and phasing plan for the complex. Phase 1 introduced synthetic turf fields, upgraded sports lighting, improved concessions and restrooms, and ADA-compliant access—enhancing safety, accessibility, and playability for athletes and visitors.⁠

The design also incorporated durable, low-maintenance materials and sustainable strategies, including native landscaping, water-quality best management practices, and ecosystem protection. Later phases added a clubhouse and fan amenity zone featuring a playground, walkways, and pedestrian lighting, culminating in a ribbon-cutting celebration in June 2023.⁠

On this day, North St. Francois County R-I School District celebrated the completion of district-wide improvements designed to create safer, more accessible, and better-performing schools for students and staff.⁠
⁠
The work began with a collaborative long-range facility planning process that helped the District identify its most pressing needs and establish a clear list of priorities. In 2020, the Bonne Terre community demonstrated its support by passing Proposition S, a no-tax-increase bond that funded improvements across the District.⁠

Incite Design Studio completed secure entrances at every school, along with administrative renovations, restroom improvements, acoustical upgrades, and district-wide electrical and kitchen equipment updates. Roofing and mechanical improvements addressed aging infrastructure, while ADA upgrades and new inclusive playgrounds created more accessible environments for students of all abilities.⁠

Additional improvements enhanced the student experience beyond the classroom. The Middle School received auditorium and sound system renovations as well as a new elevator, while the High School auditorium benefited from acoustical and sound system upgrades. A replacement of the High School track base also improved the District’s athletic facilities. Together, these projects allowed North St. Francois County to address critical facility needs while making a lasting investment in its students, staff, and community.⁠

On this day, Cornerstone Elementary opened its doors, marking a new chapter for students, staff, and families in the Excelsior Springs School District. Originally constructed in the 1960s, Westview Elementary included classroom wings that were difficult to access and had significantly deteriorated over time. While the building’s older portions no longer supported the District’s needs, the front section—constructed in the early 2000s—remained a valuable asset. Incite worked with Excelsior Springs School District to develop a practical solution: remove the outdated classroom wings, repurpose the newer portion as an early childhood center, and construct a new elementary school on District-owned land nearby.

The design team used the site’s hillside topography to create an efficient, cost-conscious layout, with the main entrance located on the upper level and a second entrance providing direct access to the lower level. Designed for an ideal capacity of 582 students, Cornerstone includes 26 core learning spaces, dedicated special education and life skills rooms, a counseling suite, and flexible support areas. Students also benefit from a new media center, gymnasium, cafeteria, art and music rooms, while administrative offices, teacher workspaces, storage, and other support areas enhance daily operations.

Cornerstone Elementary provided Excelsior Springs students and staff with an adaptable school designed to support evolving educational approaches for years to come—while giving new purpose to an existing community asset.

With more than 35 years of experience as a teacher, principal, district administrator and superintendent, Jay brings a firsthand understanding of the educational, operational and financial challenges school districts face.

His experience leading facility planning, bond initiatives, strategic planning, and community engagement will be an invaluable resource for our clients. Jay will help districts build trust, align stakeholders and connect educational goals with facility solutions that support students, staff and communities. We’re excited to have him on our team!

On this day in 2022, Incite Design Studio celebrated the completion of Phase I of the Platte County High School rebuild—a major step toward transforming a disconnected campus into a cohesive, future-ready learning environment.⁠
⁠
Originally constructed through a series of additions and separate buildings dating back to the 1960s, the high school presented significant wayfinding and circulation challenges, including requiring students to walk nearly 400 yards outdoors between adjacent buildings. Rather than continuing to add onto an already complicated campus, Incite worked with Platte County School District to develop a long-term vision for rebuilding and reconnecting the school through a thoughtful, phased approach.⁠
⁠
Phase I introduced a new two-story academic wing with 26 classrooms, consolidated dining into one central cafeteria, and added the Pirate Fieldhouse, locker rooms, weight room, auxiliary gym, and supporting spaces. Designed around the District’s eight Principles of Learning, the new spaces improved connectivity, supported collaboration, and provided greater flexibility for evolving educational programs. The project also established the foundation for Phase II and the District’s ultimate goal of bringing approximately 1,600 students together under one roof.⁠

We had a successful Incite U×U 2026! Our annual all-company gathering brought teammates from all four offices together for a day of learning, collaboration and connection. We spent the day investing in ourselves, sharing knowledge and continuing to strengthen the way we work together to serve our clients.

Then it was time to unplug. We wrapped up the day with plenty of laughs, friendly competition, and a spirited game of trivia that brought out everyone's competitive side. It was the perfect reminder that while we’re passionate about the work we do, it’s our people who shape our culture and make iDS what it is.

Here’s to another year of learning, growing and designing together!

On this day in 2022, incite Design Studio celebrated the completion of the new Lindenwood University Bookstore, transforming an existing space within the Spellmann Center into a vibrant, centralized hub for campus life.⁠
⁠
Relocating the bookstore to one of the University's highest-traffic buildings created a more accessible and convenient destination for students, faculty, and visitors. Through the renovation of two floors within the Spellmann Center, the project reimagined underutilized administrative and classroom space into a modern retail environment designed to enhance the student experience.⁠
⁠
A striking curtain wall storefront provides visibility into the bookstore while creating an inviting connection to the surrounding student union. The lower level features the retail store, spirit shop, and checkout area, while the upper level houses textbooks, school supplies, and dedicated back-of-house support spaces, creating an efficient layout that supports both daily operations and the needs of the campus community.⁠ The new bookstore became a welcoming destination that reflects Lindenwood University's commitment to student success and campus engagement.⁠
