On this day in 2023, incite Design Studio celebrated the completion of Indian Woods Middle School for the Shawnee Mission School District, an innovative transformation designed to better support how students learn and teachers teach today.
Originally built in the 1960s and expanded over time, the school no longer aligned with modern educational needs. Working within a tight timeline and budget, our team focused on creating meaningful impact within the existing structure, reimagining the traditional classroom wing to foster collaboration and flexibility.
A new three-story addition between existing stair towers transformed a narrow corridor into a dynamic, double-loaded learning hub. Each level now features expansive collaboration zones and flexible spaces for maker activities, media production, robotics, and small group learning, empowering students with choice and adaptability.
The project also introduced updated building systems, improved amenities, modern classroom technology, and new furniture throughout, creating a more functional, future-ready environment for the entire school community.
As we celebrate 25 years, we’re looking back at the projects that shaped our journey and the communities we were honored to serve. Stay tuned for more highlights throughout the year.
