A crew is preparing to move pipe, rebar, forms, or castings. The lift seems routine, but one rushed movement can become a sprain, strain, or soft-tissue injury that follows a worker home.

As an Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer, here is the field checklist:

• Plan before the lift: size up the load, clear the path, and decide whether you need a teammate or a machine.
• Keep the load close to your body. Avoid twisting while carrying; turn with your feet.
• Match the tool to the task. Use long-handled shovels, a grip diameter that fits the work, and tools with sharp, serviceable edges.
• Mechanize first. Use skid steers, pipe lifters, dollies, and carts instead of muscle whenever practical.
• Rotate tasks and break up sustained kneeling, bending, and repetitive motion. Small adjustments can protect a career.
• Speak up early. Report soreness or discomfort before it becomes a more serious injury.

Strong crews do not prove themselves by carrying what a machine can move. They plan intelligently, look out for one another, and make safe decisions before the strain begins.

Picture this: an operator spots a 5-gallon pail near the fuel trailer. No label. No markings. He assumes it is diesel. That unmarked pail is a hazard communication failure waiting to happen: and a strike against everything we stand for on site.

Every chemical on our projects: fuel additives, curing compounds, form release agents, solvents, and dust suppressants: carries a right-to-know responsibility:

1. LABEL IT. Every chemical container gets a legible label with the product identifier, signal word, hazard pictograms, and hazard statements. If you transfer a chemical, label the new container before filling it. “I’ll remember what it is” is not a label.

2. KNOW THE SDS. Safety Data Sheets must be accessible to every worker. Before opening a new product, review Sections 2, 4, 6, and 8: hazards, first aid, accidental releases, and required PPE. If you cannot access the SDS, do not open the container.

3. ASK BEFORE YOU ACT. Never use a chemical you cannot identify. Never mix products or assume one behaves like another. If a container is unmarked, damaged, or leaking, stop, isolate it, and report it. Unknown substances stay untouched until trained personnel identify and dispose of them properly.

Read the label, check the SDS, and raise your hand when something does not add up. That is how we protect every worker, every day, on every site.

The grinding wheel throws sparks against the steel. Below, hydraulic fluid has seeped onto the pad, and a fuel can sits tucked near the equipment. One spark in the wrong place can turn a routine afternoon into a site emergency.

Fire prevention is not about reaction: it is about keeping ignition sources and fuels apart before they ever meet.

As Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainers, we teach our teams to ask before hot work begins:

1. Is hot work the only option? Mechanical methods: cold cutting, shears, saws: can eliminate the ignition source.
2. Have flammables been moved at least 35 feet away, or protected with fire-resistant covers?
3. Is a designated fire watch in place with no other task but watching for fire and sparks?
4. Are fire extinguishers charged, inspected, and immediately accessible? Know PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.
5. Is the work area clean? Oil-soaked ground, trash, and dry vegetation are fuel.
6. Are fueling and refueling procedures enforced? Engine off, cool-down period, no smoking, approved containers, and a spill kit nearby.

The job does not end when the sparks stop. Maintain a post-work fire watch for at least 30 minutes, then re-check after wind shifts, breaks, or crew changes.

Fire safety is a culture; from the welder to the operator to the laborer, everyone owns the next 60 seconds.

A work zone is more than a place where construction happens: it is a shared space where workers, equipment, and the traveling public must move safely together.

As an Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer, I remind every crew that temporary traffic control begins before the first vehicle enters the work area. A strong plan protects people before a hazard develops.

Consider this scenario: Your crew is preparing for overnight utility work along a busy roadway. Before work begins, confirm:

Traffic control plan: Is the plan current, understood, and aligned with MUTCD requirements?

Advance warning: Are signs, tapers, cones, drums, barriers, and the arrow board correctly placed and visible from a safe distance?

Flagger safety: Are flaggers trained, positioned with an escape route, and clearly visible to approaching drivers?

Separation: Is public traffic physically separated from workers, equipment, and open work areas?

Daily inspection: Has the setup been inspected at the start of the shift and after changing conditions, impacts, or traffic movement?

Night work: Are workers, signs, barriers, and equipment visible without creating glare that blinds drivers?

The safest work zone is one designed with intention, inspected with discipline, and respected by everyone who enters it. When we protect the public, we protect our teams: and the legacy we are building together.

As heavy-civil contractors, excavators, and site-prep specialists, we share active work zones with massive machinery daily: excavators, loaders, dozers, and haul trucks. Eliminating blind spots is a non-negotiable priority on every Parrish & Sons jobsite.

As an Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer, we know struck-by incidents are preventable when strict communication protocols and pedestrian separation zones are enforced.

Four essential protocols:

1. Establish Clear Danger Zones: Maintain a mandatory safety perimeter around operating equipment: at least 15 feet clear of swing radii and moving tracks or tires.

2. Verified Eye Contact & Hand Signals: Operators must never move until eye contact is confirmed with the designated spotter, and standardized hand signals are understood by all ground personnel.

3. Positive Communications Before Reversing: Verify backup alarms, amber strobes, and convex mirrors: but never rely solely on technology. Ground personnel must confirm the path is clear before signaling a reverse.

4. Pedestrian Walkway Separation: Designate and barricade walking paths, fully separating foot traffic from haul roads and excavation loading zones.
