As heavy-civil contractors, excavators, and site-prep specialists, we share active work zones with massive machinery daily: excavators, loaders, dozers, and haul trucks. Eliminating blind spots is a non-negotiable priority on every Parrish & Sons jobsite.

As an Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer, we know struck-by incidents are preventable when strict communication protocols and pedestrian separation zones are enforced.

Four essential protocols:

1. Establish Clear Danger Zones: Maintain a mandatory safety perimeter around operating equipment: at least 15 feet clear of swing radii and moving tracks or tires.

2. Verified Eye Contact & Hand Signals: Operators must never move until eye contact is confirmed with the designated spotter, and standardized hand signals are understood by all ground personnel.

3. Positive Communications Before Reversing: Verify backup alarms, amber strobes, and convex mirrors: but never rely solely on technology. Ground personnel must confirm the path is clear before signaling a reverse.

4. Pedestrian Walkway Separation: Designate and barricade walking paths, fully separating foot traffic from haul roads and excavation loading zones.

A clean jobsite is more than a professional standard: it is an active safety control.

On a heavy-civil site, a trip hazard can appear quickly: a hose crosses an access path, spoil spills onto a walking surface, cords collect near a temporary power source, or demolition debris is left where crews need to pass. In excavation, grading, utilities, and demolition work, these conditions can turn a routine task into a serious slip, trip, or fall.

From an Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer perspective, housekeeping must be continuous: not something reserved for the end of the shift.

Keep walkways and access points clear. Route and secure cords and hoses away from travel lanes. Remove debris as work progresses. Store tools and materials in designated areas. Protect openings and excavation edges, and use barricades when a hazard cannot be corrected immediately. Recheck the area after weather changes, equipment movement, or a crew transition.

The extra minute spent restoring order may prevent an injury and keep the entire operation moving safely. Every worker has a role in recognizing, correcting, and communicating hazards.

Safety is built into the work: one clear path, one secured hose, and one thoughtful decision at a time.

Safety Topic Tuesday: Securing the Active Heavy-Civil Site. 🚧

As heavy-civil contractors and Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainers, Parrish & Sons Construction emphasizes that jobsite safety extends far beyond PPE and machinery operation: it begins with comprehensive site security and perimeter control.

Active excavation and heavy site development areas present unique hazards to the public and unauthorized visitors. Securing our perimeters is a critical line of defense:

1. Clear Signage & Perimeter Fencing: Clearly mark all active zones with danger and warning signs. Maintain sturdy fencing and controlled access points to restrict entry exclusively to authorized personnel equipped with required PPE.
2. Trench & Excavation Safeguards: Unattended excavations pose extreme fall and cave-in hazards. Ensure trenches are barricaded, flagged, and securely covered or backfilled when work is paused.
3. Equipment Immobilization: Heavy machinery must never be left unattended with keys in the ignition. Lower blades, buckets, and attachments to the ground, engage parking brakes, and lock operator cabins at the end of every shift.
4. Daily Site Inspections: Competent persons must inspect perimeter barriers, warning lights, and access gates daily to ensure integrity against unauthorized entry or tampering.

A secure site protects our community, safeguards our valuable assets, and ensures every worker returns home safe. Building with a multi-generational vision starts with uncompromising vigilance.
