When a storm cuts off roads, ports, or fuel deliveries, the impact can last long after the weather clears.

For communities that rely on diesel shipped or flown in, that's a real concern.

On International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, we're highlighting one reason locally generated energy matters. Small wind won't prevent a disaster, but it can help reduce dependence on fuel deliveries as part of a well-planned energy system.

How much of your property does a small wind turbine actually take up?

Probably less than you think.

While a wind turbine needs adequate open space and proper siting to perform well, the physical footprint of the tower itself is relatively small. On farms and ranches, that means the surrounding land can often continue to be used for crops, grazing, equipment access, or other day-to-day operations.

The bigger consideration isn’t how much land the turbine takes up. It’s whether the site has the space and wind conditions needed for the turbine to perform well.

Small footprint. Plenty of room to keep working around it. 💨👣

Today is Energy Efficiency Day, a good reason to appreciate what the wind can do.

For the right property, small wind can be part of a more efficient energy mix, generating electricity on-site and working alongside solar, battery storage, and other energy sources.

The wind is already there. The opportunity is putting it to work.

What makes a good site for a small wind turbine? 🤔

Hint: it’s about more than living somewhere that gets windy. The best sites have good wind exposure, plenty of open space, and minimal nearby obstructions that can disrupt airflow.

Trees, buildings, and terrain can all create turbulence and reduce the amount of usable wind reaching a turbine. In general, clearer exposure means a turbine has better access to the stronger, more consistent wind it needs to generate energy effectively.

A little behind-the-scenes look at what’s happening at Skystream! 👀🚪

We’re in the process of moving into a new space and getting everything set up, including our improved manufacturing and office areas.

There’s still plenty happening behind the scenes, but it’s been exciting to watch the new space take shape!

🍂 Fall is officially here, the days are getting shorter, and weather patterns are changing.

Solar may get fewer hours of sunlight this time of year, but that’s also part of what makes wind and solar an interesting combination.

Wind doesn’t depend on daylight, and in many areas, winds are stronger during the colder months. Because they produce power under different conditions, wind and solar can complement each other throughout the day and across the seasons.

When people think of renewable energy at home, on the farm, or for a business, solar panels usually come to mind first.

Most power outages are measured in hours. But what happens when one stretches into a few days?

It’s worth asking before severe weather arrives: how long could critical community services run on backup power alone, and if that backup depends on fuel, is the reserve sized for a multi-day outage, not just a multi-hour one?

Goodnews Bay and Perryville faced some of the same realities of producing power in remote Alaska, including heavy reliance on diesel, but the projects addressed very different community needs.

Together, they show the importance of designing energy systems around the communities they serve. The right approach depends on the infrastructure, existing generation, local capabilities, and priorities already in place.

👉 What can we learn when we look at these two projects together? Read the broader lessons for designing energy systems around the communities they serve: https://www.goskystream.com/news/reliable-power-for-remote-communities-lessons-from-two-alaska-wind-projects

🛻⛽️As storm season approaches, communities that rely heavily on diesel have more to consider than the cost of fuel.

When that fuel has to travel long distances by truck, ship, or air, severe weather can interrupt deliveries and make an already complicated supply chain even harder to manage.

Our Industry Brief looks at diesel dependence from this broader perspective, including the transportation, logistics, and maintenance that come with it.

One of the simplest benefits of wind energy is what it doesn’t require: burning fuel to generate electricity.

Wind turbines generate electricity without producing direct air pollution or greenhouse gas emissions during operation, making wind part of a broader shift toward cleaner ways of producing power.

Ahead of the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies on September 7, we’re proud to be part of an industry working toward cleaner energy and cleaner air.
