“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” — T.S. Eliot

Starting a business around 50 wasn’t exactly how I pictured this chapter of my life. 😂

At an age when some people are thinking about slowing down, I jumped into something that challenged just about everything I thought I knew about myself.

There have been some pretty humbling moments. Learning new skills, making mistakes, figuring out how to keep all the plates spinning, and wondering more than once if I was completely out of my mind.

But there have also been some pretty incredible moments.

Building something alongside Bill. Watching an idea turn into something real. Finding out that I'm capable of far more than I ever gave myself credit for.

And perhaps the biggest one? Showing my kids that it's never too late to try something new, take a chance, or build a life that looks different from the one you originally imagined.

I don't know exactly how far this journey will take us. But I do know that if I hadn't been willing to take the risk, I'd never have found out what was possible.

And honestly? I'm still figuring that out. ❤️

“I hate you. Thanks for making me go. ❤️”

Pretty much sums up my morning with Ray.

After a few stressful months of being less than consistent with my workouts, my strength, skills, and cardio have definitely taken a hit.

And today? I REALLY didn't want to go.

Enter Ray (at 5:01am, mind you!)

Ray: “CrossFit?”
Me: “There's running.”
Ray: “I know. Maybe we can convince him we row.”
Me: “I hate you. Thanks for making me go. ❤️”
Ray: “Thanks for being miserable with me!”

And just like that, I showed up.

Was it pretty? Nope.

Did I survive? Yep.

Am I glad I went? Absolutely.

It's funny how sometimes we just need someone in our corner to help us get moving.

Whether it's getting back into a workout routine or tackling a home project that's way outside your comfort zone, there's no shame in asking for a little help.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go recover from all that rowing (because y'all know I loathe running!)

So, who's your Ray? The person who gets you moving when you'd rather just stay on the couch? 😂

Apparently, this week’s lesson in learning new skills applies to more than home projects. 😂

This morning I got up and did a beginner Pilates workout.

I normally don’t do Pilates, yoga, ballet, or really any of those “tiny controlled movement” workouts because I have ZERO patience.

I like movement with a little more…oomph. Give me something to lift, carry, push, pull, or count down and I’m happ(ier).

But those tiny Pilates movements had my muscles screaming.

And since it was a beginner workout and I struggled with some of them, I’m choosing to believe that means I was doing them correctly.

Sometimes learning a new skill means slowing down, being uncomfortable, and accepting that you’re a beginner.

That’s something we’ve talked about all week with home projects, too.

You don’t have to know how to do everything. You just have to be willing to learn—or know when it makes more sense to use someone who already has the skill.

Today I’m working on a skill of my own:

Patience in movement.

Apparently, I need a beginner class for that one.

🍂 This porch feels like sweater weather.

These homeowners were returning clients — we had worked on their other home, and they brought us along for this project, too.

They had the vision.

They just didn’t have the particular skillset needed to turn that vision into a porch.

And honestly, that’s okay.

None of us are supposed to know how to do everything.

Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is know what you don’t know how to do…then let someone else handle that part.

Now they get to enjoy the finished porch instead of spending their fall trying to figure out how to build it.

Seems like a pretty good way to spend sweater weather. 🍂

Ever wonder why some contractors seem to know everything?

The truth is, the best contractors never stop learning.

That's why we have two pairs of headphones around here. 😂

One is usually charging because we're constantly listening to podcasts, training, industry updates, and new ideas that help us serve our customers better.

Not because we know everything.

Because we know there's always more to learn.

Every project is different. Every home is different. Every customer has unique needs.

The more we learn, the better solutions we can provide.

We believe being good at what you do isn't about having all the answers. It's about being willing to keep looking for better ones.

Know what you know.

Know what you don't.

Know when to ask for help.

And never stop learning.

So if contractors sometimes sound like they know everything...

It's probably just the headphones. 🎧😂

Have y’all recovered from that game last night?!

We’ll take the win!

And now that football season is here, it officially feels like fall. 🍂

Which means it’s probably time to admit…most of us did NOT finish the summer project list.

That leaky faucet? Still dripping.
That loose deck board? Still loose.
That fence? Still leaning.
That outdoor project? Running out of nice-weather days.

And here’s the thing about fall in Kansas City — the clock is ticking. Before the weather turns, the holidays arrive, and suddenly you’re wondering how it got to December.

So if there are a few things around the house you’ve been meaning to get done, now’s a pretty good time to stop saying “I’ll get to it.”

Because football season may just be getting started…

but project season is running out.

Sometimes you don’t need a solution.

Sometimes you just need to go to lunch with someone who gets it, eat some tacos, and VENT. 🌮😂

Running a business can be exhausting.

Add regular jobs, family, life, schedules, decisions, problems that need solving and approximately 900 things that were NOT on the schedule…yeah. It can get overwhelming.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is step away for lunch. Talk. Vent. Laugh. Complain a little. Eat tacos.

Did we solve all our problems over lunch?

Nope.

But we walked away feeling lighter, laughing more, and ready to get back at it.

Turns out tacos are not technically a business strategy.

But I’m not ruling them out.

Sometimes you just need a break, a good conversation, and a reminder that you don't have to carry everything by yourself.
