Rogue Visual Design is a Kansas City based design firm that specializes in 3D Laser Scanning services for the Architectural, Engineering, and Construction industries. 3D Laser Scanning (also known as reality capture, high-definition survey, or LiDAR) uses highly-accurate laser technology to digitally capture the shape, location, and dimensions of physical objects and environments in a non-contact and non-destructive way. Rogue Visual Design is proud to be one of VERY few companies that focus solely on providing laser scanning and support services. Our single-focus allows us to develop expertise in utilizing the best of rapidly changing technologies paired with the most efficient procedures for your projects. Our team is led and staffed by engineers and designers with years of industry experience and bring a data-driven mind-set to every project. As engineers and designers ourselves, we know the information to gather; we know what questions to ask; and we know how to deliver the information so that it is quickly integrated and useful.Further, we are able to convert the laser scan to a BIM model for clients who want to extend the usefulness of the laser scans. Due to our range of experience, we are able to accurately model the architectural, structural, and mechanical systems to the client's required level of detail. There's a castle on a hill in Lindsborg, Kansas. Coronado Heights was built from Dakota limestone by the WPA in the 1930s, and local legend says Coronado ended his search for the seven cities of gold nearby. We used a hybrid scanning approach, deploying static and mobile scanners, at two recent multiplex theater projects (one in Glendale, California, and one in Lake Buena Vista, Florida). This allowed us to tap into the strengths of both technologies: the speed of the mobile scanner and the precision of the static scanner. Mobile scanners tend to drift over distances. Quickly looping through the rows of seats in each auditorium was the perfect mobile environment. Our static scanner documented the long corridors connecting them. This hybrid workflow allowed us to capture 15 and 12 auditoriums, respectively, in approximately 8 hours per multiplex, rather than the estimated 40 hours that the static scanner alone would have taken.

Because the Florida project took place at Walt Disney World, maintaining the guest experience was a priority. Scanning could not begin until the final patron had left for the night, and all work needed to be completed before the spaces reopened to the public the following day.

By Completing the fieldwork in a single overnight session, we avoided potential disruption to daily operations while reducing scanning and reimbursable costs. Finishing the fieldwork sooner allowed the design team to begin earlier and deliver the final construction documents ahead of schedule.

Throughout history, major advancements have stirred questions about how it will change the way we work. Technological progression has given us powerful tools, and like any powerful tool, its value relies on the knowledge of the people using it.

A laser scanner can create a highly accurate digital representation of an existing space/structure. Understanding the data and applying it effectively requires experience and an understanding of the technology.

The most successful technological advancements do not replace human expertise or connection. It brings people together and gives them better tools to solve problems and share ideas.

So fear not! You don’t have to choose between new technology and traditional knowledge, you can have both.
