On International Walk to School Day, we’re highlighting a project that started with one student speaking up for a safer community.

A King Middle School student wrote to the City of Kankakee asking for a safer crosswalk in front of their school. The vision became reality through a $200,000 Safe Routes to School Grant.

The project transformed the crossing on IL Route 17 with a raised median, widened crosswalk, flashing signals and beacons, improved sight lines, and intersection safety improvements.

One student’s question helped spark an investment in safer routes to school. That’s community impact.

You probably don’t think about engineering when you drive to work.

But the road beneath you, the drainage system carrying rainwater away, the utilities serving the buildings around you and the infrastructure connecting communities all depend on careful planning and design.

Engineering is everywhere.

A park built for more ways to play, gather, and connect. 🌳

The Hawkins Park Improvement Project transformed the space into a more welcoming, accessible, and functional destination for the entire community.

Improvements included an ADA-accessible playground and carousel, bocce ball courts, a game table, a permanent restroom facility, ADA-compliant sidewalk connections, and parking lot upgrades.

From everyday play to community events, Hawkins Park is now better equipped to bring people together and create opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities to enjoy the outdoors.

That’s what thoughtful design can do: create spaces that work better for everyone.

A park can be so much more than a place to play, it can be a place where a community comes together.

Piggush Engineering was proud to provide surveying, engineering, grant assistance, bidding, construction engineering, and project closeout services for the Village of Cullom’s Village Park Improvements Project.

Completed in July 2026, the project transformed a sparsely developed recreation area into a more welcoming and accessible community gathering space.

Improvements include:
✔️A new ADA-accessible playground with compliant safety surfacing
✔️A pavilion and performance stage for community events
✔️A game table for outdoor recreation and social connection
✔️New on-street parking
✔️ADA-compliant sidewalk connections throughout the park

The project was made possible in part through a $600,000 Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) OSLAD grant.

We’re proud to have helped bring this vision to life and create a space where Cullom residents of all ages and abilities can gather, play, celebrate, and enjoy their community.
