Blue Xylem – restoring and refinishing furniture. We are honored to collaborate with Woodwork Designs Hawaii on the partial restoration of the Hawaii Governor’s Koa Desk.
This beautiful piece received a careful touch to bring out its elegance and functionality:

Replaced the felt inlays on the desktop with luxurious black leather.

Refreshed and refinished the edges around the newly installed leather.

Revitalized the surface finish of the lower part of the desk to restore its original character.

Every detail was carefully handled to respect the history of this iconic desk while giving it a renewed presence.

Thank you, Downtown Art Center and Poiesis, for organizing such a wonderful Inami woodcarving presentation and demonstration by Master Nambu Hakuun III.

During my studies in Europe, where I spent four years learning about the history of furniture, I became very familiar with European carving traditions. Yet I never truly had the chance to understand Japanese woodcarving in depth—how it is approached, taught, and practiced. Seeing this craft presented so openly and skillfully was deeply inspiring and personally meaningful to me as a woodworker and restorer.

This piece is a perfect example that even furniture that seems to be at the end of its life can be restored back to full function and beauty. Complete disassembly of the dresser, cleaning all structural joints from old glue, and reassembling it so every drawer works beautifully again.

It is manufactured by Carl Hansen & Søn.

Koa, a native Hawaiian wood, is celebrated for its rich tones and stunning grain.
This chair was refinished with two coats of environmentally friendly, water-based clear finish, giving it a subtle 30% sheen.
