Get ready for round 13,342,537......lol
Lake effect snow showers continue or resume overnight with a northwest wind along Lake Michigan and Superior, January 28th, 2026.
Wednesday, most of our snow will be confined closer to the lakeshore. Gusty winds may create drifting snow across areas not being impacted by snow as well, so be cautious if that happens to you. Generally speaking, 1-3" is expected up and down the Lake Michigan shoreline, however we added a couple bullseyes of 2-5", just in case a few locations surpass the 3" mark. Kalkaska county has a tiny region of 4-8" too as totals here will likely get to at least 4" by Wednesday night. It may be close, but after today's spot-on 4-8" (some even overachieved) along and west of the US-131 corridor, we cannot rule out those higher totals. Into the UP, winter weather advisories are in effect for the two regions highlighted by 4-8" or 6-11" totals. Lake Superior is freezing over, but it does still have a lot of time left before it freezes completely. Alger and Luce counties are battling the heavy snow now. We would not be surprised if some locations around Grand Marais or Paradise exceed 11" in the next 24-28 hours. Over into the western UP, highest totals will be along the spine of the Keweenaw Peninsula/Porcupine Mountains, or north and west of M-26. Totals here will generally be around half a foot, but a few totals could reach 8", especially near Lake of the Clouds/Ontonagon.
Like Tuesday, Wednesday could see a couple instances of 1"+ make it to the east side of the state, but it will be a rare instance if anything. With a wind from the northwest, most bands will stay west of US-127. The trace-1" is more of a safety blanket for a day like tomorrow. Don't expect much if you're on the east side of the Lower Peninsula (keep expectations lower).
We are continuing to monitor the ice sheet forming on all the Great Lakes. As the ice forms, our fetch (length of lake available for moisture/clouds) becomes cut off. Keep yourselves tuned in here at Michigan Storm Chasers.
