Stamped concrete vs Pavers? A question that we get asked a lot and is situation dependent! We love both and each has their own strengths and weaknesses.
Let’s discuss pavers:
🔹 Durability & longevity
-Individual pavers can move slightly without cracking, so they’re less likely to crack than one giant slab of concrete.
🔹 Easy repairs
-If one paver gets stained or damaged, you can replace just that piece to match.
🔹 Aesthetic variety
-Tons of colors, shapes, sizes, and patterns (herringbone, basketweave, circles, etc.) allow for unique designs.
🔹 Water drainage
-Permeable options help stormwater drain into the ground naturally. This reduces runoff and aids in meeting codes.
🔹 Flexibility in cold climates
-Freeze-thaw cycles cause less heaving and prevents cracking because gaps allow movement.
🔸 Higher upfront cost
-Material and labor costs are generally more than stamped concrete.
🔸 Installation complexity
-Requires a well-prepared base, precise layout, and cuts that are time-intensive.
🔸 Shifting/settling if not installed well
-Poor base prep can lead to uneven stones over time.
“BASE PREP makes or breaks pavers! This is the biggest factor that creates a long lasting product!”
Now, let’s discuss concrete:
🔹 Lower cost initially
-Usually cheaper to install than high-end pavers.
🔹 Faster installation
-One big pour — faster than laying hundreds of pavers individually.
🔹 Versatile aesthetics
-Can mimic brick, stone, slate, wood planks, etc., with color/stain options for a custom look.
🔹 Seamless surface
-Great for smooth patios and pool decks with fewer joints.
🔸 Cracking
-Larger surfaces are more susceptible to crack over time from ground movement mainly due to freeze/thaw.
🔸 Harder & costlier to repair
-Repairs often leave visible patches; matching color/textures years later is tough.
-Replacement also requires larger slab replacement
🔸 Resurfacing may be needed
-Seal coating every few years to maintain appearance and protect against stains.
🔸 Less natural drainage
-Water sheds off rather than drains through like permeable pavers. This can cause for additional stormwater management depending on local codes.
Similar to pavers, cracking prevention and longevity is dependent upon the base. Utilizing the correct materials that don’t hold moisture is the key to a long lasting product.
