What is that???
Scum... and it's a good thing to see in your septic tank!
A healthy septic tank will have three layers.
1. Scum - a floating top layer that is mainly made up of cooking fats, soap residue, grease, or food. Contains anything that floats in water.
2. Effluent - liquids which remain after the solids have settled to the bottom, and fats, oils, greases and floating waste have stayed at the top.
3. Sludge - the bottom layer of solids.
The top scum layer is a collection of many items that are unhealthy to be sent out to the system. They collect at the top and also allow bacteria living in the layer the opportunity to break down solids.

*Can you spot the soap suds at 1 o'clock in the picture? This is at the inlet of the tank. As it was cleaning day, soap suds were being pushed out into the scum layer, and the water was being pushed down into the effluent layer as noted above.

Who's up for a home addition? In this project, we installed a temporary driveway, removed some cement to an offsite location, and excavated the area for the new footings and crawlspace. Time to pour some cement!

Today's project was removing an old 6,000-gallon metal holding tank and installing a new cement tank of the same size.
The old tank was 7' tall by 25' long. The new tank is about 8' wide, 19' long, and 6' tall. Each half weighs about 20,000 lbs!

Holding Tank Day... We were so thankful the hole stayed mainly dry!
Today was in with the new and then out with the old.
New (4,000-Gallon Cement Tank) - Dig a hole, level some stone in the bottom, set the bottom of the tank, put the cover on top, install a vent and a remote suction.
Old (3,000-Gallon Metal Tank)- break the cement holding down the tank and move it onto a pile. Pull out some of the dirt next to the tank, pull out the tank, and fill in the hole.

Are you the missing piece? We are looking to hire a full-time person to join our small team. We are in the dirt business - septic system installations, basements, driveways, hauling with dump trucks, demolition, soil testing, and more.
What are we looking for? You either know how to run equipment or, most importantly, are willing to learn. Willing to learn/do all jobs, as every day is a different adventure at a new location, and with a small crew, everyone helps with all tasks. CDL training can be provided here. Can't be afraid of a shovel, rake, and hard work. You will come home with dirt on you 🙂 Someone who can work independently or together as needed. Trustworthy, strong work ethic and desire to the job done right. No standing around holding up the shovel; jump in and find something to work on or ask what's next. Mechanical skills are also a plus, or willing to learn them.
Longer hours in spring, summer, and fall, with opportunity for shorter hours/days off in winter if desired. Work is within 1 hour of the main office.
