The art of sowing seeds has lost its enthusiasm over the years people are more in favor of instant gratification. I personally enjoy growing plants by seed. Pictured below are the wonderful Penstemons. These are true workhorses of desert landscaping, versatile plants, and great in mass plantings for informal cottage garden styles, and they are very drought tolerant once established.
These also benefit the ecosystem by providing food for our desert hummingbirds. The best time to sow these seeds is right now in December as these must be stratified to germinate. Cover them with no more than 1/4 inch of planting mix. I like to place cages around the plants when they emerge as birds and lizards love fresh tender seedlings.
