The art of sowing seeds has lost its enthusiasm over the years people are more in favor of instant gratification. I personally enjoy growing plants by seed. Pictured below are the wonderful Penstemons. These are true workhorses of desert landscaping, versatile plants, and great in mass plantings for informal cottage garden styles, and they are very drought tolerant once established.
These also benefit the ecosystem by providing food for our desert hummingbirds. The best time to sow these seeds is right now in December as these must be stratified to germinate. Cover them with no more than 1/4 inch of planting mix. I like to place cages around the plants when they emerge as birds and lizards love fresh tender seedlings.

This is a paving Job I did years ago probably 8 years give or take before I was licensed even. Ironically it is probably the best job or at least one of the best designs I ever did. I
don't have before photos but the site was bare earth prior. This design was done to scale on a drafting table. Every paver was placed specifically according to my drafted plans to create these specific geometric shapes.

Thought I would share some horticulture knowledge: Plants fundamentally manufacture their own food. H2o is a fundamental element in that process. Via photosynthesis in chlorophyll light photons in the red and blue spectrum a very specific red and blue light is used to split the hydrogen ions from the water as well as Carbon from CO2 along with other processes combine to create the sugars, starches, and carbs plants need to fuel growth and other cellular processes. In the summer heat water is crucial as much is lost via the plant's stomata which allows O2 gas to escape the plant while also allowing CO2 to enter the plant, H2O is lost. This is why sometimes during the hot times of the year plants seem to just go stagnate. For deciduous plants when the plant is dormant this is a great time to replenish the plant's vascular system to get a head start for Spring growth. You can also aid a plant's ability to absorb more water by keeping your soil properly aerated. Applying mulch such as straw or other organic material helps keep the soil cool thus allowing the water to stay in the soil longer giving the plant more time to uptake water.

some of my first flowers to bloom this Spring. This is the "Cistus creticus" a Mediterranean native. This is a very showy plant when in bloom. A very good staple for bees as the blooms are rich in quality pollen, it has been theorized that a lack of this due to development which is to blame in part for colony collapse disorder This plant makes a great accent or in mass. I plan on adding more since they are tough and drought tolerant.

Here is my latest outdoor creation using Arizona Sandstone. This is a simple yet elegant design creating a corridor to the kitchen and other interior spaces. The rustic hue of this stone as well as the texture of the cobblestone resonate well with the innate heartbeat of the Mojave Desert.

Here is a basic dry stacked retaining wall to secure a fairly steep gradient. I think the grey hue works out well popping out against the soil and background.
