It is getting to be that time of year again! Chimney Techs is getting calls to service fireplaces, both wood and gas. One of the most common calls that we get is the result of dead batteries in the remote control system. Chimney Techs actually had one yesterday where someone called saying that they could not get their gas logs to work. I asked if they had changed the batteries and they asked me to just come on over and fix it. Absolutely, we can do that. Guess what the problem was...yep, dead batteries.

However, if you have gas logs with a remote control and they are not working, try this first. Change the batteries in the hand held remote, and also in the receiver which is in the fireplace itself. It probably looks something like the photo below. Also, if the batteries do not fix it, try opening a different package of batteries and installing them. Sometimes brand new batteries can be weak enough to not operate the system.

Chimney Techs is happy to help get you gas log systems going. But if we can help you to avoid a service call charge, we are happy to do that as well. I know that it is going to be in the 90's over the next few days, but it is October so lets get those fireplaces fixed up and taken care of before we need them!

October 4 - 10 is National Fire Prevention Week. The timing is interesting to us here at Chimney Techs, because it also coincides with cooler weather. The connection between National Fire Prevention Week and cooler weather is that it is almost wood stove and fireplace season.

To me, it is often ironic that the only thing standing after a house fire is the chimney, especially if the chimney is what actually caused the fire. Chimney fires are a large contributor to homes burning every winter. The easiest way to prevent this is to service your fireplace (or wood stove) annually. I spoke to someone this week that called for a chimney cleaning and they told me that they knew that their fireplace had not been cleaned in 5 years! Creosote can build up very quickly, and it absolutely can lead to a chimney fire that can burn your house down.

Another leading cause of house fires are incorrectly installed fireplaces or stoves. If you have moved into a house that you did not see built yourself, you really need to have it inspected and cleaned before you use it. Chimney Techs has inspected three homes in the last few days that, if they had used their fireplaces much, would have likely led to a bad fire because they were incorrectly installed.

I feel like we harp on this at Chimney Techs all of the time. I was discussing with Nick this morning via text how much NFPA code drives almost everything that we do. Whether it is Chimney Techs or another certified chimney professional, please have your fireplace checked out and cleaned before you use it.

I woke up this morning and went outside and it was actually nice! We are as excited as everyone else is that the extreme summer heat is finally over! To celebrate decent weather some of our inventory is going on sale. These include things such as a Hampton pellet stove, a Roma cast iron pellet insert, vented gas logs, a couple of wood stoves, etc.

If you are looking for something to help heat your home and give it some extra panache, give Chimney Techs a shout. Also, if you need your fireplace, insert, or stove serviced, let us know. Since the weather has cooled off a little bit many more people have started contacting us about service work. Call now to get on the schedule before we get booked up weeks in advance!

Chimney Techs recently did a project for a customer that we wanted to share. While inspecting a customers fireplace we realized that their mantel did not meet fire code for clearance to combustible materials on the sides of the fireplace. In English, that just means that the wooden "legs" of the mantel were too close to the fireplace to be safe. The customer asked us to rebuild the mantel and, while I am definitely biased, I believe that it came out pretty nice. She wanted to keep the antique mirror on the top so we had to make the bottom portion of the mantel wider. This was definitely not an easy job, but when it was finished, you could not tell that the final version was not originally built that way. The customer was exceptionally pleased.

The photo in the lower right shows what the mantel originally looked like. The other two photos show the "reworked" mantel after it was rebuilt and reinstalled.

So much of our business has to do with safety, that it is sometimes easy to forget that a nice fireplace should not only be safe, but should also be pleasing to the eye as well.

Have you ever thought that you would like a fireplace, stove, or insert, but it was just unusual enough that you had a hard time finding it. If that is the case, Chimney Techs should be your next call!

Chimney Techs sells and installs all kinds of fireplaces, stoves, and inserts. If you want something done, and it is possible, we will be able to find what you need and get it installed for you. Need a see through electric fireplace? We know of 2 that are readily available. How about a direct vent fireplace in a position that will require some odd venting runs? We have done that many times. How about a see through fireplace on an outside wall? Our response would be "Would you prefer a linear design or a traditional style?" How about a vent free wood burning stove? Well...there are some things that even Chimney Techs cannot do.

Just a heads up! Exciting things are coming to Chimney Techs in the next few weeks. We can not say what they are today, but we will be making announcements very soon.

In the meantime, we had a conversation with a contractor last week about something that we see from time to time. When we are installing fireplaces and stoves, they have a measurement that is called "clearance to combustibles." This is the distance that the fireplace or stove needs to be from anything that will burn so that fires do not start and burn your home down. That is an important thing to consider and this seems pretty straight forward. However, there is some confusion about drywall.

Drywall is often used as a fire barrier in construction. This is due to the fact that the gypsum in the middle of the drywall does not readily burn. That is why it can be used as a fire barrier in construction. However, it does have paper on the outside of the gypsum. Paper can burn, so it is indeed combustible. Cement board is a non-combustible material that can be used as a wall board when the material has to be non-combustible.

In these circumstances, use cement board instead of drywall. We know that it is more expensive, but fire code requires that it be used in some circumstances.
