Just a heads up! Exciting things are coming to Chimney Techs in the next few weeks. We can not say what they are today, but we will be making announcements very soon.

In the meantime, we had a conversation with a contractor last week about something that we see from time to time. When we are installing fireplaces and stoves, they have a measurement that is called "clearance to combustibles." This is the distance that the fireplace or stove needs to be from anything that will burn so that fires do not start and burn your home down. That is an important thing to consider and this seems pretty straight forward. However, there is some confusion about drywall.

Drywall is often used as a fire barrier in construction. This is due to the fact that the gypsum in the middle of the drywall does not readily burn. That is why it can be used as a fire barrier in construction. However, it does have paper on the outside of the gypsum. Paper can burn, so it is indeed combustible. Cement board is a non-combustible material that can be used as a wall board when the material has to be non-combustible.

In these circumstances, use cement board instead of drywall. We know that it is more expensive, but fire code requires that it be used in some circumstances.

Does your fireplace need an update? My wife and I enjoy watching home remodeling shows. Right now we are binging on one based out of Laurel, MS and it is one of our favorites. The only thing that bugs me is that the fireplaces in these old homes that are remodeled often get overlooked.

If the people on the show that my wife and I watch were doing the room in the photo, it would get new window treatments, wall and floor finishes, and paint. However on the fireplace they would probably take the front off of it and not do anything with it at all. That is a waste.

There are multiple options for redoing a fireplace such as is shown below. There are electric, gas, wood burning, and pellet inserts available depending upon what you need. Chimney Techs recently hosted a class on how to repair gas fireplaces of all types. While it was a refresher class for most of the attendees, there were a few of us (including myself) that it was our first gas fireplace repair class. I am an office monkey and do not go out in the field with our techs, but I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I knew more about gas fireplaces than I thought that I did!

We had people come in from as far away as Auburn, Alabama to the class. We met quite a few new people in the industry and learned some new things. Chimney Techs is definitely getting ready for the cold weather that is coming. Give us a call and we can help you get your fireplaces and stoves ready for the cold weather as well.

If you are going to be buying a house soon, you really need to the have the chimney and fireplace inspected before you close on it. While home inspectors are great and serve a need, very few of them are certified chimney professionals like we are at Chimney Techs.

I cannot tell you how many chimney and fireplaces we have inspected after a home sale that do not meet code and are, quite frankly, dangerous.

Chimney Techs recently inspected a factory built wood burning fireplace that had been installed with B Vent pipe for it's flue. B Vent pipe is usually used for things such as the exhaust for a gas hot water heater. It is not meant for the heat created by a wood burning fire. We do not believe that this fireplace ever actually burned wood, primarily because we believe that it would have burned the house down.

We have also seen brand new installations that were less than a year old that were incorrectly installed by "professional" installers. If you are installing a fireplace or wood stove, please make sure that you utilize someone that is a certified chimney pro like we are at Chimney Techs.

This painting by John Trumbull depicts when the first draft of the Declaration of Independence was presented to the Second Continental Congress. This put America on the road to an independence never seen before or since on this earth. But it was not an easy road then, nor is it now.

While many of the signers are names that we recognize today, many were left destitute after the war. Everyone that signed the Declaration put their lives on the line for a nation that did not yet exist except in their hearts. They openly declared themselves as traitors to the King of England, and they put themselves and their families at great risk. And all of this was done for the idea of freedom.

I personally take this for granted far too often. Chimney Techs would like to challenge you to actually read the Declaration of Independence over this weekend that we are celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We live in a truly great nation.

Chimney Techs will be celebrating with our families and will close Thursday, July 2, reopening on Monday, July 6. And my God bless America!

When the summer is here, Chimney Techs is not quite as busy selling and servicing fireplaces and stoves in the Memphis, TN and Northeast Arkansas areas. We took some time yesterday and worked on our personal grills and smokers.

While we are fireplace nerds, we also like to eat well, and having our grills and smokers in good working order helps with that.. Having scrap stainless steel sheets around helps with repairs like we had to make! Today we are testing out the repairs on the smoker by smoking chicken wings.

Chimney Techs hopes that you are enjoying your summer as well. It will be fireplace and stove season again soon and we will have more work to do than we can get done, so we are trying to make the most of our summer.

It is that time of year again! It is Chimney Swift time! The Chimney Swift is a migratory bird that is federally protected. They like to nest in chimneys. If you have a chimney that does not have cap and screen on the top (and please make sure that the screen meets fire code, if it is too fine a screen it will clog up) there is a high probability that a chimney swift will nest in your chimney.

"What is the problem with that?", may be your first thought. The problem is that you cannot disturb them, their nests, or their eggs. If you need repair work on your chimney, it cannot be done until these guys migrate in the fall.

Every time Chimney Techs has to break the news to a customer that we cannot complete the work on their chimney until the fall, they are surprised, and usually fairly unhappy.

If you do not have them now, please make sure to get an appropriate cap on your chimney. If you do have them, get with us in the fall and we can take care of getting you an appropriate cap so that they will not be with you next year.
