Fall is hands-down one of the best times of year to plant trees, shrubs, and perennials in Oklahoma. The cooler air is easier on new plants, and warm soil encourages strong root development before winter sets in.
However, a few simple missteps can stall that growth or damage your investment. Before you grab the shovel, make sure you aren't making these common mistakes:
1. Burying the plant too deep
Always keep the root flare (where the trunk meets the roots) level with or slightly above the soil line to prevent root rot.
2. Drastically cutting back water
Cooler days mean less evaporation, but new roots still need consistent hydration until the ground freezes.
3. Piling mulch against stems & trunks
Mulch insulates roots, but piling it high like a volcano traps moisture against the trunk and invites pests. Keep it 2–3 inches deep and pulled back slightly from the base.
4. Ignoring the lawn around your new beds
Fall turf nutrition and w**d control now mean a thicker, healthier yard and far fewer headaches come March.
Our team brings together complete landscape design and planting, irrigation tune-ups, and expert turf management to make sure your outdoor space stays healthy through every season.
