Williamsburg Gray is one of the colors we install most, and this Johnson City home shows why.

This Johnson City homeowner went with Owens Corning Duration in Williamsburg Gray, one of the most popular colors we install. It's a gray that stays neutral, so it works with brick, white siding, or darker trim without fighting any of it.

We offer Duration in every color Owens Corning makes. If you're weighing a few, we're glad to bring samples out so you can see them against your own house instead of on a screen.

One of these problems alone would not mean a new roof. All four together do.

Last week we shared the view from the ladder on this Johnson City inspection. Here is the rest of what Isaiah found once he was on top.

Paint is peeling off the powder-coated fascia. The south-facing slope has lost a good share of its granules, while the north side is holding up better. That pattern points to age and years of direct sun rather than a single storm. Add a few missing shingles, a few torn ones, and a number of nails popping through and the picture is clear.

Put all of these issues together and they tell you the roof has reached the end of its life, and from here it will wear out faster, not slower. That is the point where patching costs more than it saves.

Wondering which side of your roof is aging faster? Send us a message and we will take a look.

Pate was inspecting a roof in Johnson City this week and found a closed valley, where the shingles from both roof planes overlap right down the middle.

It looks tidy, but it has a weakness. Leaves, pine needles, and grit work their way under the overlapping shingles and sit there. Over time that debris starts to lift the shingles in the middle of the valley, which is exactly where the most water on your roof runs.

We build an open valley instead. A three-foot-wide strip of valley metal goes down first, and four to six inches of that metal channel stays exposed. Water and debris ride the smooth metal straight off the roof, with nothing to catch on and nothing to pry upward.

Most of a roof replacement is work you never see once it's finished. Here is what went into this one in Bluff City.

We tore off the old shingles and replaced the rotted decking underneath. Ice and water shield and synthetic underlayment went down next, and drip edge, step flashing, and counter flashing went in to protect the places water likes to find first.

Then the new shingles are installed the right way. And we don't miss the details that get skipped on a rushed job. We built a cricket behind the chimney so water runs around it instead of pooling against it, and we installed perma boots on the plumbing vents instead of rubber boot covers, which crack with age.

Isaiah was still on the ladder when the gutters told him most of the story.

During a roof inspection in Johnson City, he noticed three things before he ever stepped onto the shingles. First, staining on the fascia board behind the gutter. That means water is getting behind it, either because the gutter was hung wrong or because it is overflowing. Second, dirt kicked up from the landscaping onto the siding below, which points to water spilling over the edge instead of reaching the downspout.

Then he looked inside the gutter and found piles of shingle granules. Granules are the protective surface of a shingle. When they come off in that quantity, the roof is aging and no longer shedding water the way it should. The granules also clog the gutter, which feeds the first two problems.

Worth a look at your own house: check the fascia behind your gutters and the base of your siding after the next hard rain.

The look of traditional materials with the performance of modern technology. We present Synthetic Cedar Shake.

Real cedar is gorgeous the day it goes on. Then the weather goes to work on it and over the years the shakes fade to gray, curl at the edges, split, and hold onto moss in the shady spots. Proper upkeep takes regular treatment and replacement.

On this home in Elizabethton, the owners loved the look of their original cedar and wanted to keep it. So we installed Brava's Sierra Cedar Shake. It carries the same deep texture and varied profile as hand-split cedar, and it matched the look of the old roof so closely that most people driving by would never know the difference.

The difference is in what it doesn't do. It won't rot, split, or cup the way wood does, and it holds its color far longer than natural cedar.

If you have a cedar roof that is starting to show its age, call (423) 439-9327 and we will talk through your options.

This is what was holding up the shingles on this roof. Much of it was not holding anything.

Jonny found this in the attic of an historic home in the Tri-Cities. Older houses often have board decking, individual planks laid across the rafters, instead of the plywood sheets used today. Over the years, moisture got to these boards, and much of the decking has rotted through.

That matters because every shingle is held down by nails driven into the decking. When the wood is rotten or missing, those nails have nothing to grip. The roof develops soft spots you can feel underfoot, shingles loosen and lift in the wind, and water finds its way into the attic and the framing below.

It is also something you cannot see from the driveway. It only shows up from the attic or during a tear-off.

Seeing a sag in your roofline or a dark stain on the attic boards? Send us a message and we will take a look.

Comparing roof quotes this fall? Come compare the options in person.

We will be at the Tri-Cities Home Show at the Appalachian Fairgrounds in Gray, September 25th through 27th, and we would like to walk you through the roofing system options we offer.

One thing worth asking any contractor, us included: what goes under the shingle? Underlayment, flashing, and ventilation decide how a roof handles Tennessee weather and attic heat. These are the line items that quietly differ from one quote to the next.

Stop by and bring your questions. If you would rather talk before the weekend, call (423) 439-9327.
