Late Bloomer Farm & Rabbitry is a small urban farm project started by Seth and Kathy Croteau. We have approximately 1/10 of an acre of land which we are attempting to use to it's fullest capacity for the production of berries, vegetables and meat. We grew up in rural areas and had vegetable gardens when we were growing up, Seth also had experience with raising and processing rabbits. After a numbe

r of years working many hours and raising three children we decided it would be nice to raise some fresh vegetables once again. We started out with container gardening on our patio, growing lettuce, herbs and a patio tomato. This quickly led to a desire to expand our fresh food options. During this time we watched the documentary Food Inc and immediately became concerned about the effects of GMOs( genetically modified organism) on our health. We then decided to turn as much of our lawn into vegetable and berry producing gardens as we could and we have accomplished a great deal of this goal. Additionally we decided that since there was a fresh and healthy meat option available to us with raising rabbits we added this to our farm plans. We hope to have a bee hive and other small productions in the future and eventually move to a more rural area where we can operate a full time rabbitry, along with other farm animals to supplement our food sources. our honey bee operations have become successful enough to operate a new business venture. We will now be producing more honey and bee products ..we would appreciate your support in our new venture. In keeping with our new venture we have renamed our farm to become Late Bloomer Farm & Apiaries.

Part of what we do on such a small parcel of land is crop rotation and using cover crops to enrich the soil for next year's crops. Potatoes take a little out of the soil so this year we planted fava beans to add nitrogen back to the soil and act as a w**d suppressor. They are growing nicely.

The summer is winding down but we're getting a nice harvest of tomatoes. The sweet potatoes look good and our hot peppers are growing like w**ds and we have a ton of peppers coming. We planted nine varieties of peppers ranging from mildly hot to well.....ummm..holy hotness. Needless to say we're going to be making a lot of hot sauce this year.

It's been a busy fee weeks and I've been remiss on sharing what's going on at the farm. Yesterday and today I harvested all our potatoes we got close to 100lbs. The picture only shows the red Pontiac and russet potatoes as I harvested and bagged the Yukon golds yesterday. Our mushroom log is beginning to produce some nice shiitakes. More to come.

After looking at the potatoes I took a walk around the garden plots. Everything thing is looking good. The tomatoes are setting lots of fruit, the Persian cucumbers and Lebanese zucchini look great and we've harvested a lot from these plants already. The green beans are producing really well and our apple tree is loaded with fruit.

We are almost 1/3 through the summer and most of the crops look pretty good. The potatoes which were planted in April have finished flowering and some vines are starting to turn brown at the leaves. We probably have another 3-5 weeks before we start the harvest but they look good

I had a chance to go through the blueberry bushes for a second time. I got a bowl of berries like this about a week ago....

I had a chance to go through the blueberry bushes for a second time. I got a bowl of berries like this about a week ago. It looks like there will be one or maybe two more rounds. We had a better harvest last year but two of our best producing bushes got hit pretty hard by the late spring 26 degree nights.
