Replaced a set of stairs on this aging deck. Sometimes not all components age equally. On this job, the main structure was fine, but the stairs had rot and lots of it. Stair stringers can trap moisture because the end grain of the wood is exposed, letting water soak in. The treads above block airflow, so the wood stays damp. Over time, this trapped moisture causes rot and decay. This weakens the stair structure causing both a shorter lifespan and a hazardous situation.
Anyway, I digress. We whipped up a new set and the customer was thrilled! Crisis averted!
So, make sure to check your stairs for rot and decay. No one wants to go crashing to the ground when they just stepped out real quick to let the dog do its business.
