How to Revive Shrubs After Winter

Winter can be brutal on shrubs. Deep freezes, rapid temperature swings, and prolonged periods of frozen soil leave roots dehydrated, branches scorched, and plants struggling to emerge in spring.

Homeowners like you often see browning, dieback, or slow leaf‑out, all signs of winter injury. The good news? With the right early‑spring care, most shrubs can recover. Biochar blends added with the understanding of what winter actually does to the root zone is the first step.

>Winter damage is primarily a root‑level problem, not just cosmetic
>Shallow‑rooted plants are the most vulnerable to winter injury
>Wildlife pressure (deer, voles, rabbits) compounds winter stress
>Biochar blends help shrubs recover by rehydrating the root zone
>Biochar rebuilds soil structure damaged by freeze–thaw cycles
>Long‑term resilience comes from year‑round planning, not just spring fixes

After years of “wanting to get this” to incorporate into my tree health care practice, I finally pulled the trigger. In my observations so far, the treated plants look 1000% better than before.
As I’ve always said, healthy soil makes healthy plants, and this stuff is maybe the best thing for soil.
Got a struggling tree? Let’s talk about how we can make it vigorous again.

We offer VITAL Blend soil amendment (in granular and liquid form) and activated BioChar and Humates individually. For our VITAL Blend, we generously charge the biochar with the Humate to create an exceptional soil amendment that improves even the most impoverished soils.

Our flagship product, VITAL Blend is perfect by itself or used as a foundation for mixing with other products to improve plant growth. It is easy to apply, and applicators can use 40-60% less than other soil amendment products, saving time, effort, and money.

VITAL Blend offers a unique combination of Active and Fixed Carbon that plays a crucial role in enhancing soil health and fertility. Active Carbon, more readily available to microorganisms, serves as a food source for beneficial soil bacteria and fungi.

This dynamic component of VITAL Blend fosters a thriving soil biology, which is essential for nutrient cycling and organic matter decomposition. As these microorganisms break down organic materials, they release nutrients that are vital for plant growth. Additionally, Active Carbon helps improve soil aeration and water retention, creating an ideal environment for root development. On the other hand, Fixed Carbon works to build long-term soil structure and stability. It contributes to the formation of aggregates, which enhances soil porosity and promotes better drainage. This is particularly beneficial in preventing soil compaction and erosion, allowing roots to pe*****te deeper and access essential nutrients and moisture.

By incorporating both Active and Fixed Carbon into the soil, VITAL Blend not only improves its overall structure but also creates a balanced ecosystem that supports robust plant growth. Ultimately, this dual approach leads to healthier plants, increased yields, and more resilient agricultural systems. making VITAL Blend an invaluable addition to any soil management strategy.

Ever wonder why trees turn different colors in Autumn?
After the nitrogenous chlorophyll gets re-absorbed, the remaining chemicals determine the leaf color. Carotenoids, Xanthophylls, and other compounds make the beautiful orange, red, yellow, and purple colors photographers crave.

Ever have “sap” raining down on everything??
Actually, not entirely true.
Meet tuliptree scale; a soft scale insect that feeds on plant sap then poops honeydew, a sticky, sugary waste product that coats things below making them look wet or shiny. Black sooty mold (a fungus) then usually grows on it and makes the surface look like, you guessed it, black soot!!

Does YOUR honey locust look this good??
Last year a client’s honeylocust was hit HARD by minosa webworms, so I did a therapeutic, systemic treatment for the bugs, and this year air-tilled and vertimulched the root zone with compost amendments.
It’s vigorous and healthy as ever!

HOW IS BIOCHAR DIFFERENT FROM CHARCOAL?

Technically, is a type of charcoal. Not all qualifies as biochar.

The charcoal you use on the grill when you’re camping is not anything you’d want to put in or on your soil. Often, it has additives (oil-based) that help those “briquettes” burn better. The pyrolysis process for charcoal optimizes the end product for burning. And when you burn charcoal, it becomes ash with CO2 and other gases emitted into the atmosphere.

For filtration purposes, charcoal can be “activated” using an energy-intensive chemical or steam process. Activated charcoal is used in medicine, air, and water filtration.

Biochar, on the other hand, is used for and carbon sequestration. When biochar is incorporated into the soil, the inert carbon molecules end up as sequestered carbon for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. The massive pore structure in biochar serves as a luxury condo for microbes, and it improves soil structure while increasing the rate of nutrient cycling.

Biochar removes carbon from the atmosphere; charcoal adds carbon both during production and burning. You use biochar to grow your food and charcoal to cook it.

This ornamental Cherry had major girdling roots. Thankfully the owners contacted me before the tree was showing too much stress from it.
As you can see, the girdlers had quite a stranglehold on the buttress roots, but with time, she should recover nicely.
