Georgetown's water is surface water — and it's treated like it.

The City's own 2025 report: chlorine up to 4.54 ppm, disinfection byproducts at 73.65 ppb against an 80 ppb limit. Add a 100,000-gallon wastewater spill into the San Gabriel in January and flood-driven main breaks that put ~2,000 homes on boil-water notice.

Do You Know Where Your Shut-Off Valves Are? Most Central Texas Homeowners Don’t — Until It’s Too Late.
Under every sink and behind every toilet in your home is a small valve called an angle stop. Its one job: shut the water off to that fixture when you’re replacing it — or when it springs a leak.
Here’s the problem. Most homeowners never touch these valves until an emergency. And here in Central Texas, our hard water lets sediment build up inside them. Years go by, and when you finally need to turn one, it’s frozen stiff. Force it, and the valve can break — turning a small leak into a much bigger one, fast.
Just as important: know where your main water shut-off is. In most Williamson County homes, it sits in a 6-inch valve box with a green lid, right before the water meter. In a burst pipe or major leak, an accessible main shut-off can save you thousands in water damage.
Our recommendation: test your angle stops gently a couple times a year, and locate your main shut-off before you need it. If a valve is frozen, corroded, or won’t seal, don’t force it — have it replaced.

Snapped this photo on a recent call. That’s a corroded gas connection sitting right at ground level. This is what happens when gas work gets done by someone who isn’t licensed for it — wrong materials, no permit, no pressure test, and nobody checking the work.

I get it — handymen are cheaper. But gas isn’t the place to save a few hundred dollars. A bad water line leaks water. A bad gas line can take the house with it.

If anyone offers to run gas for your grill, generator, or water heater, just ask one question: “Can I see your plumbing license?” In Texas, gas piping is licensed work. If they hem and haw, that’s your answer.

Not trying to scare anybody — just want my neighbors safe. Happy to look at any gas work you’re unsure about, no pressure.

💧 Heads up, Williamson County neighbors!

Starting August 3rd through September 3rd, several WilCo cities (Round Rock, Georgetown, Cedar Park, Leander, and Liberty Hill) are doing their annual "chlorine rinse" — a routine maintenance step where utilities temporarily switch from chloramine to straight free chlorine to clear out mineral buildup and biofilm in the pipes.

Officials say the water stays safe and well within regulatory limits the whole time. But you may notice a stronger chlorine smell/taste, or occasional cloudiness, for the next month.
