Ameren sent out a mailer promoting Google Nest Thermostats. But Here is why many in the HVAC industry hate them, including SSC. Thought I would share just in case you were considering getting one.
HVAC technicians often dislike Google Nest thermostats because they are frequently installed incorrectly by homeowners, struggle to control advanced, multi-stage HVAC equipment, and rely on "power stealing," which can damage sensitive equipment boards. The main reasons for this frustration include: Improper "Power Stealing": Unlike traditional thermostats that require a dedicated "C-wire" to provide continuous 24-volt power, Nest units often "steal" power through the heating/cooling circuits. This can cause relays to chatter, damage expensive control boards, and trigger false system errors. Advanced System Incompatibility: Nest thermostats are essentially designed for basic systems. They often fail to properly communicate with high-end, variable-speed, or dual-fuel systems, overriding proprietary equipment logic and reducing overall efficiency. DIY Installation Errors: Because Nest is marketed directly to consumers, many are self-installed incorrectly. Techs frequently get called out to fix miswired units, short-cycled systems, or network glitches. Oversmart Learning Features: Learning algorithms can sometimes cause erratic behavior, such as running the air conditioning for extra minutes after the compressor shuts off. This brings excess humidity back into the home and causes comfort complaints. Lack of Local Tech Support: Technicians find it difficult to troubleshoot software issues because Nests do not have standard physical manuals. Additionally, diagnosing problems with them often requires the customer to contact Google support rather than the contractor directly.
Our Advise: Just don't do it.

Don’t forget to remove covers from outside condensing units. Jenn fixed two AC’s yesterday over the phone with just that problem. It’s easy to forget and just flip a switch. As always Change your filter monthly or at least quarterly, and at a bare minimum with the change of season. Remember to change thermostat batteries if you have them as well.
