🦺 Safety First, Every Day

We’re proud to recognize our awesome employees who prioritize safety on the North Causeway Bridge Project! As a small token of appreciation for consistently wearing PPE, working safely, and holding each other accountable throughout the first six months of the year, we awarded every eligible employee a gift card.

On other project sites, V&G employees who were “caught” being safe received V&G swag.

Our crews know that every employee on the jobsite deserves to go home safely at the end of the day. They work as a team, look out for one another, and hold each other accountable for the safety of the entire site.

Let’s keep this diligent commitment to “safety-first” going! 💪🦺

"Every major bridge structure or massive highway bypass begins with a single team figuring out how to conquer the terrain safely."

In our latest feature in VanGuard Magazine, we take you directly onto the job site to break down how our crews are managing complex engineering challenges and massive earthmoving logistics on our active projects.

Beyond the heavy machinery, it’s the human grit and problem-solving of our superintendents, operators, and engineers that make these infrastructure milestones happen. Flip through to meet the team behind the hard hats.

Project Milestone Alert! 🚧

Our Flagler Beach Pier Team successfully drove the last two piles on the project. It was logistically and physically challenging, but we came together and made it happen safely and efficiently.

This milestone took hard work and dedication from the whole project team and V&G support staff – from folks in the field to our office staff spanning the eastern coast from West Virginia to Florida.

Now that the pile driving is complete, we will shift focus to finishing out the concrete caps and continuing to set the pre-cast concrete beams.

Great job to the entire Flagler Beach Pier Team!

▪️Building Digital Terrain Models (DTM)
▪️Providing Surveyor/Project Engineer support

At V&G, we value our experienced professionals who are proficient in a wide-variety of heavy construction work, making not only our employees – but also our organization – more well-rounded.

Sr. Project Manager Clint Seace – part of our V&G team in Florida – is a rockstar at managing the intricate details of some of the region’s most prominent heavy construction projects. While he is passionate about his work, it’s his team that he loves most.

“The best part of my job is working on some amazing projects with people who have become like family over the years. Whether it be people just starting their careers (like Alexia Greene and Anna Papaprella) or seeing an old mentor and friend off into retirement (like Mike Chmara), it truly is a place that you are proud to bring your children to work to see what our team does.”

Bridge Superintendent Christopher Derby is a busy man, managing several projects at a time while dedicating additional time to personal development. So what has he been up to lately?

“My team and I have recently been working on a number of projects, including driving 20" cans for dredgers that will be used as excavation markers for upcoming mooring dolphins. We will begin work in September at KMCC Superfund Site in Jacksonville, where we will be cutting sheets to grade and installing bull and guard rails.”

Most recently, Chris and his team repaired a dolphin at Center Point Terminal in Jacksonville.

Christopher has also been attending certification classes for First Aid/CPR, Traffic Control Supervisor, and CCO Certification (National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators).

Keep up the good work!

🌉 Bridge Superintendent Charles Hartsgrove gives project updates on his involvement with the North Causeway and 17th Street Bridge projects.

North Causeway Bridge: Foreman Francisco “Poncho” Romero has been doing a great job with his crew constructing a 68’ long and about 27’ tall bridge staircase. The crew built the walls first, then installed stay-in-place deck pans (like we do for bridge decks). We then installed rebar and the side forms & boards for the steps and landings. Because of the intense concrete finishing work involved, we poured the staircase in sections. We are currently working on curb and handrail installation.

17th Street Bridge: This project is mostly complete! We worked with Atlantic to finish the methacrylate installation on the entire bridge deck. Ranger completed the milling and resurfacing work that was done on both ends of the bridge deck. We are currently working on penetrant sealant for the underside of the bridge, as well as some punch list items.

Thanks for the updates, Charles! Keep following us to see what else we’re doing across the Mid-Atlantic and Southern U.S.! 🙌
