Most people don’t think twice when they hear a knock or the doorbell rings—especially if they’re expecting a package or a visitor. Unfortunately, criminals often take advantage of that instinct by posing as delivery drivers, utility workers, contractors, or even someone asking for help.

Before you unlock your door, take a few seconds to verify who is there. Those few seconds could prevent a dangerous encounter.

Check Before You Open

Use your peephole, a nearby window, or a video doorbell to identify the person outside. If you can’t clearly see who they are, don’t open the door. Modern doorbell cameras also allow you to speak with visitors without exposing yourself.

Ask for Identification

If someone claims to represent a company or service, ask to see official identification. Don’t rely on a uniform or vehicle alone. If you’re unsure, contact the company using the phone number from its official website—not one provided by the visitor.

Keep the Door Locked

Talk through the closed, locked door whenever possible. A locked door provides time, distance, and protection while you determine whether the person outside has a legitimate reason to be there.

Verify Unexpected Visitors

Not expecting anyone? Treat every unexpected knock with caution. Criminals frequently use fake deliveries, maintenance visits, surveys, or utility inspections to gain access to homes. Verify first, then decide.

NEVER OPEN THE DOOR ON AUTOPILOT.

One of the simplest safety habits you can develop is also one of the most overlooked:

Always verify before you open your door.

Every day, people open their front doors without a second thought. A knock. A familiar voice. Someone holding a package.

But criminals know this.

Many use fake deliveries, utility worker impersonations, sales pitches, or simple requests for help to get homeowners to let their guard down. Once that door opens, you’ve surrendered one of your greatest security advantages.

Before you respond:

• Look through your peephole or doorbell camera.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU CATCH SOMEONE BREAKING INTO YOUR CAR AT HOME

Your phone alerts you.

You check your security camera…

Someone is breaking into your vehicle.

Your first instinct may be to run outside.

Don’t.

A vehicle can be replaced. You can’t.

Here’s what you should do instead:

1. Stay Inside and Call 911
Get to a safe location and immediately notify law enforcement. Provide a detailed description of the suspect, their clothing, any vehicle involved, and the direction they travel if they leave.

2. Do NOT Confront the Suspect
You have no idea if they’re armed, under the influence, or desperate enough to use violence. A stolen item is never worth risking your life.

3. Turn On Exterior Lights or Activate the Car Alarm
If you can do so safely from inside your home, illuminate the area or activate the vehicle’s alarm. Drawing attention to the suspect may cause them to flee.

4. Preserve Evidence
If it’s safe, record the incident through your security cameras or your phone from inside your home. Save any footage for investigators.

5. Secure Your Home
Lock all doors and windows. If the suspect is startled, they may attempt to hide or enter another area. Make sure your family remains protected inside.

6. Report Everything
When officers arrive, provide surveillance footage, photos, and a list of anything that was damaged or stolen. The more information you provide, the better the investigation.

Remember:

A broken window can be repaired.

A stolen vehicle can be replaced.
