Since 2021, National Backflow Prevention Day has been observed on August 16th every year. The purpose of the holiday is to recognize and honor backflow preventers, and the professionals who ensure our available water supply is free of toxins, waste, harmful chemicals, and other contaminants.
The date was chosen because on August 16, 1933, the Chicago World Fair was one of the most tragic backflow incidents in history. Thousands of people came for the event, and many stayed in two popular hotels that shared a rooftop water source. Unfortunately, this cross-connection led to dysentery contamination in the water supply. Over 2,000 people became ill and 98 passed away.
Backflows are not "everyday knowledge." Most people don't care what it does until they have one that fails and they start wondering what they're paying to fix.
