Our team spent Thursday afternoon at Jacksonville Clay Target Sports for the 11th Annual Jim Davidson's Clay Day, out on the course for some friendly competition while raising money for great causes.

This clay shoot has become a fall staple for local builders, and this year's proceeds support six area nonprofits: Builders Care, St. Augustine Youth Services - SAYS, Investing in Kids - INK, St. Francis House & Port in the Storm, 5 STAR Veterans Center, and Home for Hope, and even the Russell Rowland Turkey Drive.

This has become one of those fall events worth having on the calendar every year.

Matt Pena's introduction to this industry started with a single technical drawing assignment in the eighth grade. Today, as Design Operations Manager at Russell Rowland, he spends his days doing the opposite of a single assignment: juggling schedules, shifting priorities, and keeping an entire design team moving in the same direction.

Ask him what a typical day looks like and he'll tell you there isn't one, and that's exactly how he prefers it.

For Careers in Construction Month, Matt represents the side of this industry that never shows up in a finished set of plans, but is critical to make them possible.

A monument sign looks like a simple structure: a wall with a name on it. But unlike a wall attached to a building, it stands entirely on its own, freestanding with no roof and no adjacent walls to help distribute load.

That means the wall and footing have to handle everything by itself: wind pressure pushing against a tall, flat surface, the weight of stone or brick veneer, and soil conditions that vary from one site to the next. Get the footing wrong, and even a well built sign can lean, crack, or fail over time.

Russell Rowland engineers the structural support behind monument signs with the same attention as any other structure we work on, even though most people driving past one never think to ask what's underneath.

Happy Birthday to Matthew Green, Structural CAD Designer II on our team! Matt joined Russell Rowland fresh out of Pedro Menendez High School 4 years ago and has grown into a designer who finds real satisfaction in watching a house move from paper to something a family actually lives in.

Outside the office, Matt's household runs at full capacity with his wife, Lyla, two dogs, and three cats. Weekends usually involve some yard work and walking the dogs with his wife. He's also stayed connected to where he started, serving on the advisory board back at Pedro Menendez High School.

Ask him about dinner plans and you'll likely hear about steaks on the grill, with a little country or hip hop playing in the background.

A few blocks from the Jacksonville Beach shoreline, Flight Builders is building this multi-family townhome community. Portions of the framing use balloon-framed walls extending from the slab all the way to the third-level top plate; approximately 28 feet above the lower framing.That kind of continuous framing requires careful attention to load paths, connections and lateral resistance at every level.

Coastal sites like this one come with their own wind load requirements, on top of everything else that goes into engineering a multi-story structure.

Welcome back to the Russell Rowland family, Gabriel Gonzalez!

Gabriel returns as a Structural Design Intern. He is working toward his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at the University of North Florida.

When he’s not studying or designing structures, you’ll find Gabriel on a skateboard pulling tricks on his own DIY skate obstacles. That is where his CAD journey began. He designed the parts he needed, then built them. This summer, he helped restore a skatepark in Charleston, SC.

“I fell in love with the culture and the work that is done at Russell Rowland,” Gabriel shared. “I specifically admired how many charity events we participate in.”

Gabriel is also the structural designer on his team for the ASCE steel bridge competition. We can’t wait to see what he builds next. Welcome back!
