Ever lose power to an outlet and find that none of your breakers have tripped?

Check for a tripped GFCI—the outlet with the “TEST” and “RESET” buttons.

Those little TEST and RESET buttons on your outlet? They deserve a little attention once a month.

GFCI outlets help protect against electrical shock—and you should manually test them monthly, even if they’re self-testing models.

Here’s a simple check:

💡 Plug in a lamp and turn it on.
👉 Press TEST. The lamp should turn off.
👉 Press RESET. The lamp should turn back on.

If the lamp stays on during the test or the outlet won’t reset, stop using it and have it checked.

One more helpful tip: A single GFCI can protect other outlets, too. If an outlet stops working but no breaker has tripped, look for a tripped GFCI nearby—it could be in another room, the garage, or outside.

Save this as your monthly reminder, and share it with someone who could use the tip.

Once we got into it, we found significant damage at the bus bar that was causing the problem.

Electrical problems aren't always something you can diagnose just by looking at the outside of the panel. When something isn't working right, finding the actual cause is the important part.
