Replacing a roof in Three Way, TN that's only about 5 years old. We had a shingle failure here, and the video shows what we found when we got up there.
A previous contractor laid new synthetic felt right over the old felt, and ran ice and water barrier over the top of that, so it wasn't adhering to the roof deck. The old roof should come all the way off so you can see the deck and know what you're working with.
They also added whirlybirds on top of a ridge vent. That creates a convective loop, so neither vents properly. We're removing the whirlybirds and going with ridge vent only.
This roof was part of an insurance job about 5 years ago, so the soft metal should have been replaced. The B vents never were. We're replacing them today.
In one valley you can see where water has been sitting. This is why we take everything down to the deck, so we can see the real condition before we put anything back on.
It really does matter who you hire.
