AIA Mississippi members are presenting at the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design 2026 ( ) in San Diego, June 10–13:

Design for Equity: The Living Building Challenge Affordable Housing Pilot at Hunters View

Description:

Hunters View Phase III is the final chapter of a 22-acre public housing redevelopment in San Francisco. The development and design teams were committed to revitalization without displacement and to providing new homes with resident input. This community-oriented affordable housing offers ample family homes, a lush new public park with bay views, and extensive resident and neighborhood resources.

The project team conducted Post Occupancy Evaluations on early phases to optimize the design of the final phase. This was a Living Building Challenge affordable housing pilot project, which helped the team explore innovative strategies to achieve a high level of resilience for affordable multi-family buildings. Attendees will hear what it means to hold ambitious sustainability aspirations in projects with tight budgets — and how an equity lens kept resident benefit at the center of every decision.

The Fondren is a 22,000 sf mixed-use development in the heart of the Fondren District of Jackson, Mississippi. The project includes retail space on the ground floor, office space, and Duvall Decker’s new studio on the second floor. An open courtyard opening to the south will provide parking, a pickleball court, and flexible gathering and neighborhood event space. The scope of the project includes renovation of the western portion of the existing two-story structure and the addition of a new two-story mass timber building wrapped with a metal panel façade. The building is a low-consuming, low-carbon footprint design utilizing a mass timber structure, super-insulated envelope, shaded windows, and solar panels on the roof. The studio space is illuminated by northern dormers providing a dynamic interior space tied to the cycles of the day, season, and weather.

🏆 Merit Award – Renovation/Restoration | Madison City Hall

The 2025 AIA Mississippi Design Awards honored this exceptional historic restoration and adaptive reuse of a former school building in Madison. The jury was impressed by the meticulous care taken to restore the original auditorium — including recreating the stage and proscenium — along with the faithful rehabilitation of interior historic fabric, period-appropriate fixtures and colors, and thoughtful differentiation of new materials. The restoration of the interior stairwell, with extended original balusters and a new handrail, was especially praised.

🏆 Merit Award | Splinter Creek Mail Haus

The 2025 AIA Mississippi Design Awards gave this project its Merit Award — and the jury couldn't help but love that it's been dubbed "Mail Haus" in playful reference to "Bauhaus." At just 250 square feet, this open-air mail center proves that even the smallest structures can achieve architectural excellence. Anchored by gabion stone walls and supported by painted steel tubes that nearly vanish into the pine canopy, it lightly touches the ground — with an ipe floor extending gracefully over a drainage swale. Among all submissions, it was the smallest in scale, but one of the most successful in spirit, ex*****on, and environmental harmony.

The jury was captivated by the building's unique programmatic goals — designed to transition from a residence into a facility supporting a nature preserve — and praised the exquisite woodwork details, sensitive forest-side siting, and an impressive array of environmental strategies. The massing presents interesting roof lines while the home thoughtfully incorporates local materials, using sun angles and surrounding views to enhance the overall experience.
