Labor Day may be the unofficial end of summer, but anyone from New Jersey knows we still have plenty of good weather left. Mosquitoes and ticks know it too!

Warm September weather can keep mosquitoes active, and ticks remain a concern well into the fall. If you’re planning to make the most of locals’ summer, it’s worth keeping up with the same precautions you’ve been taking all season.

Joe-Pye w**d has a strong presence in the late-summer landscape. Its tall stems and broad clusters of dusty pink to purple flowers make it easy to recognize, especially in September. Blooming from late summer into early fall, this native perennial adds height, color, and plenty of pollinator activity to the landscape.

Despite the “w**d” in its name, Joe-Pye w**d is intentionally planted in gardens and landscapes, especially in native, pollinator, and naturalized plantings.

Joe-Pye W**d Quick Facts:
🌸 Native herbaceous perennial
☀️ Grows best in full sun to partial shade
💧 Many varieties prefer moist soil and can work well in rain gardens or naturally damp areas
📏 Depending on the species or variety, plants can grow several feet tall, making them especially useful toward the back of a border or in larger planting areas
🐝 Its late-season flowers are a valuable nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators

Joe-Pye w**d is a good example of a plant that can bring both structure and ecological value to the landscape at a time of year when many summer bloomers are beginning to fade.

By late summer, bagworms are a whole lot easier to spot than they were a few months ago. Those little bags grow right along with the caterpillars inside, picking up pieces of foliage as they feed.

Arborvitae are a favorite, but bagworms can also show up on juniper, spruce, cedar, pine, and plenty of other landscape plants. A heavy infestation can cause significant browning, thinning, and defoliation.

At this point in the season, many bagworms are finishing up their feeding and getting ready to pupate like this one. That’s why timing matters. Catching them while they’re still small and actively feeding earlier in the summer gives us more options for managing them.

So if you’re noticing these hanging from your evergreens now, remember what they look like. And next year, start checking those plants early. 🌱
