Did you know fall lawn fertilizer has a deadline in New Jersey?

Beginning November 15, homeowners can no longer apply lawn fertilizers containing nitrogen or phosphorus. The cutoff for certified professional applicators is December 1.

That doesn’t mean all lawn care has to stop. Lime can still be applied during the blackout when soil conditions show it is needed.

We’re wrapping up Lawn Round 5 of our 6-Step Lawn Care Program and we couldn’t have asked for much better scenery.

Last week brought us to Grafton House and Sayen House & Gardens in Hamilton for early fall fertilization and broadleaf w**d control.

We’re helping lawns replenish nutrients, strengthen their root systems, and tackle late-season w**ds before winter.

We’ve been tending to these properties all season, and the results are doing a pretty good job of speaking for themselves. 🌱

Our October Plant of the Month: Coralberry (Symphoricarpos orbiculatus)

Coralberry is a native shrub that is easy to pick out in fall, when clusters of pink to reddish berries develop along the stems. Those berries can remain after the leaves drop, so October is when they really become one of the plant’s defining features.

Coralberry Quick Facts:
🍂 Native deciduous shrub
🌤️ Grows in full sun to partial shade
🪴 Adaptable to a range of soils once established
🔴 Produces clusters of pink to reddish berries in fall
🌿 Can spread over time and form colonies

Because coralberry can spread over time, it is usually better suited to naturalized areas, woodland edges, slopes, or larger planting beds rather than tight foundation plantings.

You may also hear coralberry called buckbrush or Indian currant. It is a member of the honeysuckle family.

There’s a new pest in New Jersey, and boxwood owners should know what to look for. 🐛

Box tree moth was confirmed in South Jersey for the first time this summer. Its caterpillars can quickly strip boxwoods of their leaves, leaving behind webbing, chewed foliage, and thinning or brown areas.

The current quarantine covers Cape May, Cumberland, and Atlantic counties. While it has not been confirmed in our service area, homeowners throughout New Jersey should become familiar with the warning signs now so potential infestations can be caught early.

We’re getting down to the wire for fall aeration and seeding. 🌱🍂

Early fall gives new grass some of the best conditions of the year to get established. The soil is still warm enough for seed to germinate, while cooler air temperatures and more consistent moisture help young grass grow without the stress of summer heat.

Aeration is done by pulling small plugs, or cores, of soil from the lawn. This helps relieve compaction and opens up the soil so water, oxygen, nutrients, and seed can get where they need to go. Once the lawn is aerated, seed is applied so it can make better contact with the soil and begin filling in thin or bare areas.

Together, aeration and seeding can help lead to:
✅ Healthier, stronger roots
✅ Thicker, fuller turf
✅ Fewer thin or bare spots for w**ds to take advantage of

We’re nearing the end of the ideal seeding window. New grass still needs time to germinate and get established before colder temperatures settle in, so there isn’t much time left.

Here’s a little closer look at Luke’s part of Saluting Branches this year.

Beech leaf disease has become increasingly common in our area, and unfortunately, several of the beautiful mature beeches at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery are showing its effects.

We were glad to be able to contribute in our own way, using plant health care to help give these trees a better chance. 🌳🇺🇸

Yesterday, our crews joined tree care professionals from across the region for the 12th annual Saluting Branches Day of Service. 🇺🇸🌳

This year brought us back to Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery, a site we return to every other year to help care for the trees and grounds. Our crews spent the day pruning and removing trees alongside a great group of tree care professionals from across New Jersey, with some even making the trip in from out of state. A few traveled quite a way to be there and give back the best way they know how.

Saluting Branches is one of our favorite days of the year. It gives us the chance to put our skills and manpower toward maintaining the beauty of a place that serves as the final resting place for so many of our local heroes.

We couldn’t have asked for better weather or better company for a day of tree work, and we’re grateful to everyone who came out and worked alongside us. 🇺🇸

Six days until Saluting Branches. 🌳

Wednesday, September 16, tree care professionals across the country will come together for Saluting Branches, each giving back in their own communities. Here in New Jersey, we’ll be joining other tree care professionals for a day of service at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery.

We’re looking back at a few photos from years past as we get ready to do it all again. We’re proud to show up, work alongside some great people in our industry, and spend the day honoring those who served. 🇺🇸
