Two years ago, Hurricane Helene changed Western North Carolina forever.
On September 27, 2024, communities across the mountains woke up to devastation that is difficult to put into words. Homes were destroyed. Roads and bridges disappeared. Businesses were washed away. Entire communities were isolated—and families lost loved ones, livelihoods, and pieces of places they had called home for generations.
For Great Lakes Generators, the devastation in Western North Carolina became personal.
In the weeks and months that followed, we were incredibly fortunate to be part of relief efforts made possible by the generosity of people right here in Michigan. Our community stepped up with generators, food, water, clothing, supplies, donations, and countless acts of kindness that made their way hundreds of miles south to families who needed them.
We saw firsthand both the destruction Helene left behind and the incredible resilience of the people of Western North Carolina.
Two years later, progress has been made—but an anniversary like this is an important reminder that rebuilding a community takes far longer than rebuilding a road or reopening a business.
Today, we remember those who lost their lives. We remember the families whose lives were forever changed. And we recognize the first responders, volunteers, churches, businesses, linemen, neighbors, and complete strangers who showed what it means to come together when people need help most.
Western North Carolina will always hold a special place in our hearts.
From our family at Great Lakes Generators to our friends in the mountains:
We haven't forgotten you. ❤️
