DUVALL DECKER ARCHITECTS, P.A. Decker and Anne Marie Decker. Roy and Anne Marie bring varied and complementary interests and abilities to a practice dedicated to the creation of forms and environments that enrich the lives of those who encounter and inhabit them. It is this dedication that binds all of the individuals of Duvall Decker, a group of unparalleled talent, experience and tenacity. DUVAL

L DECKER was established to practice architecture with a rare balance of technical skill and design ability, and our reputation with both our clients and the contractors who build our work reflects the extent of our commitment to quality. Our projects are varied in program and include buildings, renovations, interiors and master plans. Our clients are diverse and include universities, state agencies, municipalities, public school districts, churches, businesses and individuals. We intentionally limit the number of projects in the firm to ensure that the principals actively work on all phases of the work, and we seek only those projects that are best suited to our talents and expertise.

The community studio is back! Please join us once again for our Fall Concrete Studio on October 16th at 6:30PM for inspiring talks on life and art from some of our favorite local creatives. For those of you who are new to our community, twice a year we bring together a collective of creators doing cool things in our city to each tell a story of their choosing using only 20 images, with each image auto-advancing after 20 seconds. 20 images, 20 seconds each, that’s it. These are quick-paced, rapid-fire art talks designed to keep everyone engaged. We get to learn a thing or two about a new topic and have fun doing it over delicious food and drinks.

Pecan Park Elementary is a two-story, 66,207 sf school in West Jackson serving the city’s largest elementary student population. In 2020, the Design Team was engaged by Jackson Public Schools to assess the building for renovation and deferred maintenance. The assessment revealed structural movement, envelope failures, outdated mechanical systems, and inaccessible, nonfunctioning restrooms. Structural repairs alone exceeded the original $500,000 project budget. The Design Team recommended either demolition and replacement or complete renovation.

Phase I renovation began in summer 2023, with completion required for fall 2024. The existing EIFS envelope was removed to the CMU substrate, which was repaired and structurally braced. A continuous air and v***r barrier, metal panel and fiber cement rainscreen, and continuous mineral wool insulation created a new, durable envelope. Existing windows were replaced with thermally broken, energy-efficient glazing. Excavation around the building perimeter allowed installation of an 18-inch-deep void space and foundation drainage to manage subsoil movement.

A new west exit stair replaced the displaced original and serves as a colorful neighborhood lantern and gathering space overlooking the playground. Tiered outdoor classrooms and gathering spaces extend the school’s learning environment outdoors. The central stair received a new roof, curtain wall, guardrails, and handrails. All mechanical systems, including the chiller and boilers, were replaced, along with ceilings, lighting, student restrooms, classroom cabinetry, and sinks. This partial renovation extends the building’s useful life, reduces district operating costs, and avoids the expense of replacement while keeping scholars in their neighborhood. Phase II will complete the interior renovation in the future

The Jackson Free Clinic (JFC) is a non-profit healthcare facility run by medical students at the University of Mississippi Medical Center as well as volunteer physicians from the local community. The clinic is located in the heart of Jackson, MS, and is dedicated to providing completely free medical, dental, and psychiatric care to the city’s uninsured and unhoused citizens. Currently located at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Carnes Street, JFC seeks to expand to better serve its growing patient base. The Design Team was commissioned to design and construct a new 2,255 sf clinic addition, which includes three new exam rooms, a space for social health to meet with patients, a vision care room, a rehab space, and a flex space designed to accommodate physician-student interactions and future growth.

The new durable and economical patterned metal skin building is efficient and dignified, with attention being paid to making spaces that ease the stress of health care experiences. The new one-story building’s structure is composed of an exposed steel frame with wood framing infill and roof structure. The main corridor is illuminated by a rectangular light well with both north-and south-facing windows, ensuring abundant natural light and an awareness of changes in seasons and the cycles of the day.

What if architecture was about more than buildings?

In an episode from Between the Planes, one of AIA's new podcasts, 2026 AIA Architecture Firm Award recipients Roy Decker, FAIA, and Anne Marie Duvall Decker, FAIA, consider this question through the lens of their three decades of experience using architecture as a catalyst for lasting social impact.

We are an expanded firm built on the belief that architects are more than service providers and can do more to help heal our communities. Duvall Decker is an experiment to explore what servant leadership really means. In this sense, we share this award with so many like-minded firms, in small towns and cities around the country, who are working in ever more creative ways to remake the profession and improve the social and environmental health of their communities.

Architects are well-trained; we envision a future better than the past and have the skills to realize its making. We believe this is the art of practice. Today we face many challenges, social, political, and environmental. Communities need a partner in vision; they need our skills – they need our leadership.

This world is a gift. If we are going to build, we must build well.

Join our studio on April 17th at 7:00PM for a night of rapid-fire art talks from local creators, complete with drinks from and and some delicious made-to-order gourmet hot dogs from provided by us!

We at Duvall Decker seek to foster a space for the community to share ideas, stories, and experiences. Concrete Studio is a space where we gather twice a year to celebrate people, art, and our thriving community. In short, we want to highlight cool people who do cool things! Concrete Studio’s storytelling platform explores inspiration, from people to places, to culture and movements, all right in our own backyard.

We’ll be joined by eight creators to hear their stories about life and art using only 20 images, where each image will be on screen for 20 seconds. Twenty images, twenty seconds each, that’s it. Think of it as a quick-paced rapid-fire story that keeps everyone engaged (and they only speak for less than 7 minutes!). We value what our speakers contribute to the place we call home and are so excited to hear their stories!

We will set up right outside our studio in Fondren, so don’t forget your chairs! This community event is free to the public, and all are welcome. See y’all there!
