Q&A Series is Back!
We’re diving back into some of the most common questions we hear about frost-protected shallow foundations (FPSF).
❓ Question #1:
How does insulation stop frost heave from occurring?
Frost heave happens when three conditions exist at the same time:
✔️ Frost-susceptible soil
✔️ Sufficient moisture in the soil
✔️ Freezing temperatures penetrating the ground
Remove any one of these factors, and frost heave can’t occur.
💡 Insulation works by preventing the soil beneath and around the foundation from freezing. By retaining heat in the ground and reducing frost pe*******on, insulation helps maintain stable soil conditions and protects the foundation from movement caused by freezing and thawing cycles.
Additional benefits include:
✅ Reduced heat loss from the building
✅ Better moisture management around the foundation
✅ Reduced risk of frost-related structural damage
A properly designed FPSF system uses insulation to keep the frost line away from the foundation, helping ensure long-term performance even in cold climates.
