Everywhere we go, we notice the hardscape.

Whether Kevin and I are together or out on our own, I promise you, we’re both paying attention to what we are passing by.

Most of the time, it’s because we genuinely appreciate seeing someone else’s work. To us, hardscaping is an art form, and we love seeing the creativity and craftsmanship that goes into building beautiful outdoor spaces.

Every once in a while, we notice something for a different reason though. This was one of those times.

What you’re seeing in this reel is a hardscape space that has some pretty significant installation issues. The sad part is it’s clearly not very old and many of the issues could have been prevented.

Proper base preparation matters. Drainage matters. The right edging matters. How you make cuts matters. Jointing sand isn’t optional. These aren’t just little details. They are essential parts of building a space that will stand the test of time.

Unfortunately, when those steps are missed, the results eventually speak for themselves.

I don’t share this to criticize another contractor’s work. I share it because I want you to understand that not everyone actually can build outdoor living spaces. It’s truly a craft that should be done by a skilled professional.

When you’re choosing someone to build your outdoor space, ask questions. Learn about their installation process. Understand what’s happening beneath the surface, not just what you will see when the project is complete. Remember that some of the most important parts of hardscaping are the parts you will never see and those details make all the difference in how it will age.❤️

If you stopped by our table at the Penn Township Fall Festival, you may have already noticed what we are about to share, but today we are sharing it with all of you too.

Scaped Outdoors is preparing to hire a Hardscape Project Foreman for the 2027 season!

We’ve been incredibly blessed with the growth of our business. We’re already booking projects into spring 2027, and we’ve reached the point where our current crew is at capacity.

It’s a good problem to have, but it’s also made something very clear. If we’re going to continue growing and serving more families, it’s time to grow our team. We have strategically been planning what we are hiring for and the first will be this role.

Here’s who we’re looking for- someone who checks these boxes.

•Hardscape Experience: Solid experience building patios, retaining walls, walkways, and outdoor living spaces. ICPI or CMHA certification is preferred, but we are also happy to pay for the right person to obtain it.

•Hands-On Leadership: Someone who can lead, mentor, and develop a crew while building right alongside them. This is a working foreman position, not just a supervisory role.

•Project Management: You’ll oversee labor hours, material usage, scheduling, and day-to-day productivity to keep projects on track and up to our quality standards. Estimating and sales will be handled for you.

•Equipment Experience: Comfortable operating heavy equipment, hauling trailers, and transporting machinery. A valid driver’s license and the ability to pass random drug testing are required. A CDL is a plus, or a willingness to obtain one.

Beyond the experience, we’re looking for the right personality fit for our team and the culture we have built for Scaped.

We believe in taking care of our people, treating each other with respect, and creating a place where people genuinely enjoy coming to work.

We know the responsibility this position carries, and intend to compensate and care for this person accordingly.

You may not know this about us, but we are strong in our faith. Every season, Kevin and I pray over our business, constantly asking God to send us the right clients and opportunities and to bless us so we can in turn be a blessing to others.

Currently, we are praying for the person who will step into this role.

We don’t know who you are yet, but just know we’re already praying for you. For the impact you’ll have on our business, and for the opportunity we’ll have to make a difference in your life, too.

We trust that God will bring the right person into our lives at just the right time.

For now, we’re simply putting the word out that our search process for this person has begun.

If you see me out and about between now and March and you catch me having downtime, you will also probably notice I’m carrying a rather massive textbook around in my purse.

You might see me highlighting and underlining while I try to study any free minute I can find one.

You see tomorrow begins my classroom portion of the training program to become a certified master gardener through our Westmoreland county extension program.

In addition, I’ll be squeezing in 50 hours of extension sponsored volunteer work in the community to fulfill the requirements.

I have really wanted to pursue this certification for quite some time, but I always kept telling myself I was in the wrong season of life for such a commitment. As you can see, I’ve since changed my mind and decided there’s no better time than right now begin a new chapter.

This past weeks clients had one very important goal for their project.

They wanted us to help them gain safe access to the bottom of their property again. Their backyard has an incredibly steep hillside that had stairs installed prior to them owning it. The existing stairs were no longer safe to use for access so they wanted them replaced.

We came in and demoed out all of the old materials and gave them an upgrade not just in terms of how it looks, but also in terms of safe access.

I hesitated to want to share this milestone publicly, but I also think it’s worth the conversation.

In 2021 when we started Scaped, we had to decide what kind of brand we wanted Scaped to be and the image we wanted our clients to have regarding our truck, trailers, machines and equipment. We made a decision that it mattered to us to have beautiful, new, efficient tools to get the job done so it also meant we would be making a large financial investment in the early years to accomplish this.

Both Kevin and I prefer a very conservative approach when it comes to debt in both our personal and professional finances, but financing the machines actually made a lot of sense in the early days for our business. CAT offered us 0% financing on the loans for both the excavator and the skid loader for five years. As you can imagine though, the payments on these machines was not a small undertaking.

2026 has been the year where we quietly collected “titles” on all the things we financed when we were starting out. Having all the payments be completed is an incredible feeling and truthfully not something all business owners even get to experience.

To celebrate the milestones we accomplished this summer CAT surprised us with this package. A celebration of the payoffs. It’s actually rather cool that they do this.

Please join me in congratulating Kevin on acquiring what one might call the most expensive “hat” he’s ever owned.

Proud of us. So many thanks to all of you who said yes to Scaped. You helped us to be able to TRULY own the machines now.

Most of what you see from Scaped Outdoors is our projects and transformations. However- behind the scenes, there’s an incredible group of people helping us continue the momentum and growth we have been working so hard to create.

Meet some of the people behind Scaped. 🤍

Carter- He spent his summer working alongside Kevin continuing to learn the hardscape side of the business. He is also our son. Dad’s teaching him the trade while Mom’s teaching him the business side. Maybe you’ll see him running the show someday down the road.

Mike- Our website designer and manager. He built our original site, completed this summer’s redesign to improve our SEO and branding, and created our project estimator tool to help clients with preliminary project pricing.

Josh -The man behind our targeted ad campaigns, helping us put our content in front of more people in our community and continue building awareness of Scaped as we grow.

Sarah- Our official “keeper of the books,” handling our bookkeeping, payroll and tax filings while working closely with us in the day-to-day financial record keeping for Scaped.

Chris- Joining us this fall as our fractional CFO through Duncan Financial to help guide our financial strategy for the growth that’s ahead in 2027. Duncan Financial has been the ones supporting Scaped with accounting and insurance since we opened our doors.

Export Floral - The women behind our contract-signing bouquets! They help make our clients feel extra special. We feel lucky to now call them friends with as often as we have been working together this year.

Maryn- Our executive assistant who also helps manage our home and busy schedules, her support allows us to stay focused on Scaped while she keeps everything else running in an organized and efficient manner. No day is ever the same for her. She’s the jack of all trades in this role.

It may be Kevin and I at the center of Scaped Outdoors, but growing a business takes a village. We are feeling so grateful for the people helping us build into our next chapter.

As much as we enjoy building brand new outdoor living spaces, we also enjoy restoring ones that are still in great shape and simply need some detailed restoration work.

These homeowners came to us with a request to clean and re-sand their current flagstone patio and also rework the existing stairs they had on their hillside.

We worked to re- level any of the flagstone materials that needed it to reduce trip hazards. Removed all of the moss and old joint materials, cleaned things up and then and reset the space and rebuilt the fire pit area so it can continue to serve the family for more years to come in a beautiful way.

The homeowner does woodworking as a hobby and wanted to make a railing for the stair area. We helped him source materials from his property and he made these handrails while we were here working. Then we installed them for him for extra support as they use the stair area.

Enjoy the restoration transformation. It really did make the space feel new again.
