I like to tell our landscape clients to be patient the first year with the plants as they grow in.

I also share this little rhyme with them to remember about their newly installed plants. The first year they sleep, the second year they creep, the third year they leap.”

Meaning- it all takes a little time, patience and great care before the landscape beds are looking fully mature.

I have to say though- the butterfly bushes and milkweed we planted at the Parklet in downtown Greensburg have skipped the sleeping and creeping stages and went right to leaping.

I was pleasantly surprised by their size and all the pollinators they are attracting when I stoped in to maintenance them last week.

If you are local please stop by, support the local businesses on that street and enjoy the space before the butterfly season comes to an end. 🦋

Here is a look behind of scenes of how we built out this recent patio/ fire pit/ seat wall space for our clients as a portion of their total backyard transformation.

We really loved their small format paver choice. It’s such a timeless option.

As we are building spaces like these, we can’t help but think of what’s to come for the space after we leave. It’s about to become a sacred spot for the family. One that’s going to hold memories for them for decades to come.

Gavin family- Here’s to a fall filled with cozy warm fires and nights outside under the stars. Thanks for letting us build this for you.

It’s always fun to pay close attention to where our client leads are coming from. In fact- we usually always like to ask and we also track it in our sales process.

I don’t think we will ever forget where this client came from.

The kindest elderly man rang our doorbell earlier this summer when we were away wanting to know if we could build him a patio because he had been admiring Kevin’s work at our home when he would drive by and knew he did this for a living. That was a first for us to have someone just stop by at our home.

He had some older pavers a friend had given him that was in great shape and asked if we could reuse them in addition to getting new ones.

Kevin was able to deliver on the kind man’s request. We built him a new patio this week and used his old materials as his border.

Enjoy a little clip of what the process to do it looked like. Enjoy your new space Richard! We loved your company this week.

One of our final steps when the project is over is the dirt work to prep the disturbed spaces for new grass. What you are watching is Kevin compacting down the new dirt that was brought in. Next comes the grass seed, mulch and end of project clean up.

When you see this happening at your home, it’s the final step before we hand your space back over to you totally transformed and ready to be enjoyed.

Ready to wrap up yet another outdoor living transformation this month.

While we have been busy getting our children ready for back to school, we have also been working hard to help get their school ready as well.

Over the last year we have had the privilege of leading Queen of Angels Catholic School landscape committee. It’s allowed us to show our own children how to volunteer and serve in the community they belong to and it has also allowed us to make some great new friendships.

Over the last few weeks, our team of volunteers have removed overgrown shrubs on the campus, removed an awful lot of weeds and installed new pea gravel in the prayer garden area. In addition to that, we also took on a big clean up of the outdoor classroom and installed all new rubber mulch. The local Knights of Columbus chapter also spent time repainting all the railings around campus to help make the welcome back feel extra special for everyone.

Norwin Landscape & Supply has been a long time supporter of Q of A and has so generously donated many of the materials to help make these projects happen.

We are grateful to be a part of such a special community. Welcome back Guardians!

If you are a Q of A family looking for a fun way to get involved in supporting the school and enjoy working outdoors please reach out to us or the school- our team would love to have your help.

As much as we love our full scope projects with lots to transform- sometimes it’s fun to sprinkle a smaller quick turnaround project into the mix too.

Last week we built this space for our clients so they could add a new shed to their backyard.

The weather wasn’t on our side last week so we did something rare and put in hours on a Saturday to still finish in time.

We share this for two reasons-
1. Because it’s a rare occurrence that we work on a Saturday, but want you to know we will if it means staying on track with our calendar.

2. To let any of under contract upcoming clients know- Kevin is still on time and on schedule just like he has been all season.

Keeping our word on the dates we promise at contract signing matters so much to us. We are busy doing everything we can to keep our word when we give it.

I’ve been dreaming about growing this David Austin Roses climbing rose all winter long. Her name is “Gertrude Jekyll.” She is one of their most prolific, beautifully scented roses and an absolute dream to look at.

My plan is to let it climb our front porch railing that’s behind my porch swing so I can enjoy the blooms and the strong rose scent while I sit there. I also can’t wait until I have plenty to cut and enjoy inside in a vase.

The reality though is the “vision” of it being that kind of rose bush is a few years out and takes patience, time and good care of the rose in the meantime to make it happen.

Truthfully- the plant looks great. It has super healthy leaves and lots of growth, but so far I’ve only gotten two small roses all summer. That’s not because there’s anything wrong with it- it’s just because she’s busy working to establish her strong roots.

The fun part has been watching the plant grow and enjoying the process of her “becoming” the plant I know it will be a few years down the road.

I’ve never savored or appreciated a rose quite like I have this tiny Gertrude Jekyll bloom I got this week.

Use this as your reminder not to rush whatever it is your building or whoever it is your trying to become. There’s magic in the “becoming” phase too- you just have to be willing to slow down and enjoy it.

Beautiful things are built over time- not overnight.

We spent the last few days off from work celebrating the life of one of our loved ones who passed away.

She loved butterflies and she also the color loved purple. We opted to do a tribute to her in a way that felt more aligned with what we do now for a living and memorialized her with plants vs sending flowers.

Each of her children and husband were given a trifecta butterfly bush to take home to plant that will bloom with her favorite colors and attract beautiful butterflies to each of their homes.

Please keep us in mind if you ever need help celebrating the life of someone you loved and want to do it with a memorial plant. We would be happy to help make it feel special and deliver it to the funeral home for you.

Officially in my favorite part of summer for our landscaping.

I especially love this season for our butterfly bushes. It’s the time of year where we get to enjoy all the “guests” 🦋 that are stopping by to enjoy the plant as well as all the other plants we included in the landscaping to help support them while they are here.

While not a requirement, I prefer to do weekly maintenance on the bushes during this time to encourage more blooms and keep things looking healthy.

Watch this reel to see how I do the simple pruning.
