The weather up North is frightful, but the Tropical Plant International Expo was delightful!

Held in Fort Lauderdale, the annual event had thousands of growers, designers, and industry pros gathering under one roof at the Broward County Convention Center. Attendees from across the U.S. and around the globe explored sprawling exhibits filled with vibrant tropical foliage, rare specimens, and cutting-edge plant products, while educational sessions sparked fresh ideas and trends for the year ahead. Networking, horticultural gossip (!), oooh and ahhing over incredible plants....and puppies! (remember, when it comes to pets: adopt, don't shop!)

From eye-catching displays to spirited conversations, the event blended botanical business with plenty of plant-filled fun.

Take a trip back to the 1970's! 'The Secret Life of Plants' was a 1973 book and 1979 documentary film that explored the idea of plant consciousness. Though criticized by many mainstream scientists and botanists for promoting pseudoscientific claims that lacked independent verification and replicable studies, it is a fascinating time capsule.

The documentary film features a soundtrack by the legendary Stevie Wonder (the double LP album Journey Through "The Secret Life of Plants" ), which itself spawned two singles that reached the Billboard Hot 100 charts in America: "Send One Your Love" (No. 4) and the minor hit "Outside My Window" (No. 52). The single "Black Orchid" reached No. 63 in the UK.

The documentary can be watched online; behold the 1970's fashions and facial hair! Watch plants undergo experiments involving lie detector tests, as well as their response to music and sound frequencies. Trigger warning; there is an unsettling sequence wherein innocent cabbage plants are roughed up by Soviet scientists by hand, as well as by cigarette smoke- far out!
