🪴 Pull Up a Pot Thursday 🪴

Well friends… we officially went from frost to flood in approximately 11 business minutes…Ohio gardening season is truly a spiritual experience. 🥲

BUT don’t fear; there is STILL plenty you can direct sow and transplant in our zone this time of year!

Great things to DIRECT SOW right now:
🌽 corn
🫘 beans
🥒 cucumbers
🎃 squash and zucchini
🌻 sunflowers
🥕 carrots
🌿 dill
🍉 watermelon and cantaloupe

Great TRANSPLANTS right now:
🍅 tomatoes
🌶 peppers
🌿 basil
🍆 eggplant
🌼 zinnias
🐝 pollinator flowers
🥬 herbs and leafy greens

🪏WET SOIL TIP:
If your soil is SUPER soggy, try not to walk or work heavily in it right away. Wet soil compacts easily and can stress plant roots. Raised beds, containers and adding compost can really help during extra rainy stretches! 🪱🌦️

And honestly, you know what? Plant what makes your heart happy! ❤️
Are there “ideal” planting dates? Sure.
But gardening is also about experimenting, learning and simply finding joy in growing things! 🌼

If you have questions or just want to green chat, several of our Collective Gardeners will be at the community garden next Tuesday helping plant in the beds at 7th & Adams, see our event! 🌱

Come dig in the dirt with us!

🌿🪴 Pull Up a Pot Thursday 🪴🌿

Let’s talk about something really special about gardening that has very little to do with tomatoes or flowers!

Community gardening is about so much more than growing plants. It’s about growing:
💛 friendships
🌼 confidence
🌿 knowledge
✨ connection
🌱 belonging

Some of the best gardening lessons don’t come from books, Google searches or Chat GPT; they come from someone standing beside you saying:
“Here, let me show you.” 💛

It’s sharing seeds, sharing tools, sharing stories, sharing successes and occasionally emotionally processing why everyone’s cucumbers suddenly died…😂🥒

Community gardens and gardening groups create spaces where people of all ages and experience levels can learn from one another without pressure or perfection! 🌼✨

A seasoned gardener may teach someone how to grow tomatoes; while a child reminds everyone how exciting it is to watch the very first sprout emerge from the soil! 🌱💛

There’s just something really beautiful about people gathering together to grow things; especially in a world that often feels rushed, disconnected, and heavy.

So whether you’ve been gardening for 30 years or just got your very first packet of seeds from the free seed library; there’s a place for you here!

And if you’ve been wanting to get involved, follow along for upcoming dates to come garden with us in the community beds at 7th & Adams! 🌱👩🏻‍🌾🪴

🪴💛 Rooted Together Wednesday 💛🪴

One of our favorite things about community gardening is how it naturally brings people together!

This weekend, The Common Soil Collective is excited to be part of the Bobcat Community Farmers Market ; a growing local market focused on supporting families, farmers, makers and small businesses right here in our community! 🌼🌿

We absolutely love seeing spaces like this continue to grow because they create opportunities for:
🌱 local growers
🪴 handmade goods
💛 community connection
✨ small businesses
🌼 fresh food & creativity

We’ll be there with plants, garden goodies, educational resources, free seed planting and lots of garden chatter! 😂🌻

Community doesn’t grow overnight; it grows through people showing up for one another, supporting local ideas and creating welcoming spaces together!🌿💛

We hope to see you there this Saturday from 9am– 2pm! ☔️😊✨

We are SO proud of our little Sprouts and endlessly grateful to the staff, volunteers and families who helped make this year possible! 💜

While we hope these kids have the absolute BEST summer full of sunshine, popsicles and adventure; we’d be lying if we said we aren’t already excited for fall and another season of growing together! 😂🌱

🌿🪴 Pull Up a Pot Thursday 🪴🌿

Since May is Mental Health Awareness Month, this week we wanted to talk about something many gardeners already know deep down; plants help people heal! 💚

Not because gardening magically fixes everything. Not because life suddenly becomes easy; but because sometimes caring for something living helps remind us to care for ourselves too! 🌼✨

There’s something grounding about:
🌿 hands in the dirt
☀️ stepping outside for a few minutes
🪴 watering a plant
🌱 watching something slowly grow over time

Gardening teaches patience, resilience, starting over, trying again after loss, adjusting to storms, setbacks and seasons that don’t go as planned! 🌧️🌿

And honestly; sometimes just getting outside and deadheading flowers while emotionally unraveling is self-care… 😂💛

Whether you have:
🌼 a backyard garden
🪴 a tiny porch pot
🌱 one brave surviving houseplant
🌿 or simply enjoy sitting outside with your coffee; IT ALL COUNTS!

This is your gentle reminder that growth doesn’t always happen loudly. Sometimes healing looks like tiny roots forming quietly underground. 🌱✨

So this week, take a little time for yourself, step outside, water something, breathe some fresh air and let Mother Nature do what she does best! 💛

🌱 Rooted Together Wednesday 🌱

This week, we’re shining a light on one of the quiet powerhouses behind so much community growing in our area; Ohio State - Lawrence County Extension! ❤️

From gardening resources and soil guidance to youth programming, agriculture education, family wellness and community support… our local Extension office is one of those places that truly helps communities grow in every sense of the word!

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener, a curious beginner, a homesteader, a teacher or someone just trying to figure out why your tomatoes are being dramatic this year; 🍅🙃 they are an incredible resource right here in Lawrence County!

At The Common Soil Collective, we are so grateful for organizations that believe knowledge should be shared, communities should be connected and growth should be accessible to everyone.

If you haven’t explored what our local Extension office offers, this is your sign!

Thank you for helping cultivate stronger roots in our community! 🌱

🥬✨ Lettuce Introduce Ourselves Tuesday ✨🥬

This week we’re featuring the wonderfully whimsical Heather Birch! 💛🌿

While she may describe herself as more of an “indoor plant person” than a gardener, she is absolutely an environmental steward in every sense of the word! Ms. Birch continuously incorporates nature, environmental awareness and hands-on learning into her preschool classroom; AND she was also the amazing artist behind the hand painted seed packets from our Plant Bingo night! 🌼🎨

When asked what she hopes children learn early about nature and the environment, she shared:

“I really focus on how plants, animals and insects work together and what that means for our everyday lives. Without bees to pollinate flowers, or a rainy day to water the forest, we simply wouldn’t be able to make it. Even the fabric of our clothing is provided by plants.”

And honestly… we love that perspective! 🌱✨

Ms. Birch also shared her dream garden-inspired classroom project:

“Every year my class raises butterflies from caterpillars. I would love to have a butterfly garden with stepping stones decorated by the students. They could observe many species of butterflies and insects, as well as learning how to take care of a garden.” 🦋🌼

Can we all agree that sounds absolutely magical? 🥹💛

Thank you, Ms. Birch, for helping grow curious little minds and reminding kids that nature is connected to every part of our lives! 🌱✨

🌿✨ What’s Growing Monday ✨🌿

This week at Common Soil we’re feeling especially grateful for community! 💛🌱

From youth environmental stewardship programming at Wayne National Forest, to another cozy Circle gathering, to all of the conversations, volunteering, planting, learning and growing happening behind the scenes… this little community continues to bloom in the best ways! 🌼✨

This week we’ll have our last Open Door Sprouts meeting of this school year! We are SO proud of our young gardeners and everything they’ve learned and grown this year. Watching these kids connect with nature, gardening and community has truly been one of the sweetest parts of Common Soil! Sprouts motto, “We will care for plants, care for each other and grow together!”💜🌱
