How to Build a Hoop House (Even in the Rain) 🌧️🌱

Putting up a hoop house at the Koinonia of Columbia Community Garden with the fruit tree master Jaylon from

If you’ve been wondering what is a hoop house? — it’s a low-cost greenhouse structure that helps extend the growing season, protect crops from cold weather, and increase food production in community gardens and backyard farms.

We used:
• A motorized auger to dig post holes
• Base pipes set to measured depth
• Metal hoops installed and secured
• And a whole lot of dedication (because yes… it started raining 🌧️)

Building a DIY hoop house is a two-person job — but it’s one of the best ways to grow food year-round and teach youth sustainable agriculture.

This one is for the kids. Food sovereignty in action.🌞

Like and follow for Part 2 — we’re just getting started.

The 15th Annual Hands of Heritage Festival was absolutely awesome inspiring and soul-nourishing on every level imaginable. The SouthCarolina NCGrowth Team went down to Dorchester Co., SC to document the event in real time🔥

It can be further described as an expression of black culture in the rawest way possible. The Hands of Heritage Gathering, spearheaded by , is a culmination of animal husbandry, agriculture, food sovereignty, intergenerational teaching + learning, scratch cooking, cast iron cooking, community, love, friendship, ancestral wisdom, African-American southern tradition, country livin’ and good ol’ southern hospitality💪🏽

This is what true community building looks like. Real. United. Intentional. From the wee-hours of the night before prepping, ‘till the stars come out the day of. It’s a Gathering that pictures and videos barely do any justice in conveying the feeling of that space and event.

A big thanks to the SC-NCGrowth team, Marvin and Jada Ross for the hospitality, and the rest of the chefs that came from out of state to share their cuisine with the community!

Raised beds = smarter growing 🌱

3 reasons we love growing in raised beds:

1️⃣ Planting & weeding is easier on your body
2️⃣ Being off the ground improves drainage
3️⃣ Soil warms up faster = a head start on the season

If you’re serious about growing your own food, your setup matters. Raised beds help you control your soil, extend your season, and grow more intentionally.

For our communities reclaiming land and food knowledge — this is a powerful starting point.

💬 Are you team raised beds or in-ground?
📌 Save this for spring planning.

Had the honor of returning to Columbia College as a guest speaker after being invited by Dr. Gretchen Whitman of the School of Education 🌿

This spring, her students are re-envisioning the campus Georgia O’Keeffe Tribute Garden, and I was brought in to guide them through the foundations of landscape design, plant viability, and site awareness.

We explored how Georgia O’Keeffe’s artistic language—form, scale, movement, and relationship to place—can translate into living design. I shared a landscape design packet inspired by her work, then led the class through a guided walkthrough of the garden space, where we sun-mapped, observed microclimates, and discussed how art, ecology, and function intersect in real-world garden planning.

Moments like this remind me how powerful it is when education reconnects students to the land, observation, and intentional design. Grateful to work alongside educators who value experiential learning and creative approaches to sustainability 🌱

Before they touch the soil, they drink. 💧🌱

Soaking transplants before planting reduces shock, strengthens roots, and sets your garden up for success.

Small step. Big difference.
Ancestral wisdom + modern practice. 🌱

Just a simple check-in… 👀🌱
And the results speak for themselves.

This cauliflower didn’t happen by accident 🥦

It’s the result of:
Healthy soil 🟤
Proper spacing 📏
Consistent care 💧
And systems that actually work

This is why follow-ups matter.
This is why soil comes first.

When you build it right from the beginning,
the garden keeps giving.
