The company motto has always been "What would you do if you weren't afraid to try? Fear Not!".

Well, we're trying a couple things - one really exciting, the other is kicking our butts.

The exciting one, and you'll definitely being hearing about this for the next year, we are starting a renovation of a downtown Main St building into 4 residential apartments and a commercial space below. We will have lots of updates on this as it progresses.

The butt kicker - we have been contracted to remove (vacuum) the insulation from 3 houses. The first one, Monday, took at least 30 man-hours and two trips to the landfill with 1660 pounds of insulation. The second one, one landfill run with 1140 pounds and second trailer loaded so far, has already consumed at least 40 hours and I doubt we'll be able to complete it in one more day. Third job isn't even prepped yet (need to cut through a structural brick gable end to access to attic), and doesn't promise to be any fun at all.

So, we're living out the motto - "What would you do if you weren't afraid to try? Fear Not!". The worst that can happen is we won't try THAT again.

That’s a wrap for the big kitchen rehab in Ionia. All tools and miscellaneous supplies are off site, the entire project has been cleaned, and the dust barrier between the “old” house and the new work has been removed. Inspector has signed off. Final photos coming once they have everything of theirs situated.
Happy clients, happy crew, happy builder.
Already working on prepping the next job - stay tuned for the information on that one.

Figured it was time for an update on our Ionia kitchen project.

Countertops were installed today, and they are beautiful.

Entire project trim work is completed. We matched the 100 year old trims in profile and stain color. Some of the trims in the pictures are original, some are brand new - can you tell which are which?

Spent time today with client setting the pattern for the mosaic tile going on the backsplash, which we start tomorrow.

Expecting a site visit from one of our next kitchen clients, possibly as soon as tomorrow. It’s always beneficial for them to see a project currently underway so the can visualize what exactly it entails to get their dream kitchen to happen.

Teaching the apprentice how to scribe and install filler strips, as well as detailing the end of a paneled back wall of the island without using ugly moldings. Stone tops templated today, moving us one step closer to turning this over to clients.

Cabinets have arrived and first couple (the toughest ones) have been installed. More details coming soon.

This is a follow up to my last post (specifically about using the right tradesmen).
We did the floor repairs and new installation (including building the floor register and countertop) then brought in Lepley to sand and finish the entire hardwood floor.
As on the other projects I’ve used them on it turned out fantastic.
On a different note, cabinets are scheduled to arrive on site next Wednesday!

One of the most important parts of having a successful construction/remodeling business is knowing what trades are better left to the professionals - and then getting the best you can hire.

Update on our big kitchen renovation in Ionia.
Since last post we’ve completed the rear entry, gotten trades rough-ins done, installed the hardwood flooring, insulation and have drywall hung. The drywall finisher is on site, the windows due tomorrow and the date’s set to sand and finish the hardwood flooring.

Ceiling framing in and level. First of two layers of subfloor in.
Next is support the floor in basement then tapered sleepers under the second layer of subfloor.
Why all the subfloor work? Because this 100+ year old farmhouses isn’t level nor plumb - and there’s an island going in the middle of the room AND we’re continuing the hardwood flooring throughout the kitchen as well as rear entry porch.
